Paderborn welcomed Eintracht Frankfurt to the Home Deluxe Arena on Matchday 9. For the hosts, Ruben Müller made his first Bundesliga start of the season, replacing Marvin Pieringer in attack, the only change from the goalless draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Frankfurt's coach Adi Hütter made two changes, with Jonathan Burkardt starting ahead of leading scorer Younes Ebnoutalib and Ansgar Knauff replacing Keita Kosugi, which pushed Elias Baum over to the left side of defence.
Burkardt strikes against the run of play
Frankfurt began brightly, with Lilian Brassier and Ritsu Dōan both missing the target inside the first ten minutes. Paderborn grew into the game and should have led when Müller failed to connect with a Santiago Castaneda pass at the back post. Then, completely against the run of play, Farès Chaïbi pulled the ball back from the left for Burkardt, who swept it into the far corner to put Frankfurt 1-0 up in the 23rd minute.
Stefano Marino then struck the crossbar for Paderborn before Raphael Obermair levelled matters right on the stroke of half-time, slotting through the legs of Noah Atubolu after Müller had flicked the ball into his path, making it 1-1 at the break.
Pieringer's penalty, then Baum sees red
Paderborn started the second half the better side, with Müller missing the clearest chance of the afternoon from close range after Obermair's low cross.
Chaïbi struck the post for Frankfurt before the game turned on 73 minutes: substitute Marvin Pieringer was fouled by Brassier inside the box, and the Paderborn forward converted the resulting penalty himself, beating Atubolu, who had saved his previous six Bundesliga penalties, to make it 2-1. Shortly afterwards, Baum caught Laurin Curda's heel and was shown a second yellow card, leaving Frankfurt to play out the remainder with ten men.
Burkardt's late leveller
With ten men, Frankfurt struggled to create danger, but a corner in the fourth minute of stoppage time changed everything. Atubolu went forward for the set piece and won his header, laying the ball off for Burkardt, who back-heeled it through Nahuel Noll's legs to make it 2-2 and snatch a point for the visitors in the dying seconds.
Man of the Match: Jonathan Burkardt
Burkardt scored both of Frankfurt's goals, opening the scoring with a clinical finish from Chaïbi's pull-back in the 23rd minute and then equalising with a spectacular back-heel from Atubolu's header in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
His two goals earned Frankfurt a point despite playing with ten men for the final quarter of the match, and he was voted Man of the Match with 40 percent of the vote.
