Harry Kane becomes joint-most capped outfield England player
Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane has become England’s joint-most capped outfield player in the country’s history after his FIFA World Cup 2026 appearance against Norway.
Kane earned his 120th England cap in his nation’s 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway to book their semi-final ticket and in doing so, goes level with Wayne Rooney, who retired from international football in 2018.
Should Kane feature against Argentina on 15 July (kick-off: 9pm CEST), he will surpass Rooney - who hailed England’s leading goalscorer after his brace against DR Congo in the round of 32 - and move to within four caps of equalling goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s all-time record of 125.
“He’s England's superstar, he’s the hero for us,” expressed Rooney, a statement which was backed up by former Manchester City defender Micah Richards.
“[Thomas] Tuchel has based his team around Kane because he’s a genuine superstar,” added Richards. “He’s the one who stepped up when England needed him the most. He’s an absolute hero.”
Kane scored a brace in England’s 4-2 win over Croatia on Matchday 1 before netting his nation’s second against Panama on Matchday 3 as the Three Lions topped Group L.
Recording his second brace of the tournament in a 2-1 victory against DR Congo, Kane then successfully converted a penalty in the Three Lions' 3-2 win over Mexico in the last 16, taking his tally to six strikes at this summer’s tournament, and his 85th in an England shirt.
