Slovenia join England in UEFA Euro 2024 last 16 after Harry Kane shut-out
Harry Kane's England finished top of UEFA Euro 2024 Group C, despite being held to a goalless draw by Slovenia, who also progress to the last 16.
England had the comfort of knowing they were already through to the knockouts, but Slovenia arrived in Cologne needing at least a point to keep their Euro campaign alive. The Dragons duly played with the greater purpose in the early stages as RB Leipzig's Benjamin Šeško tested Jordan Pickford, before a couple of teasing Erik Janža crosses into the danger zone went begging. Bukayo Saka scored at the end of England's first meaningful attack, but the Arsenal forward's tap-in was deemed offside. Kane began to see more of the ball late in the half, the Bayern striker firing straight at Jan Oblak and going close to touching in a Kieran Trippier cross. England's record marksman went closer still with nearly an hour gone, but his header from a corner was cleared in front of Oblak's goal-line. The Three Lions controlled play for the remainder, albeit without seriously threatening a winning goal. They advance as Group C winners, setting up a last-16 meeting with third in either Group D, E or F. Slovenia finish behind Denmark because of their inferior disciplinary record, but head through as one of the best third-placed teams.
