Dieter Hecking named new Wolfsburg head coach
Dieter Hecking has been named Wolfsburg's new head coach following Daniel Bauer's departure, the club have confirmed.
Hecking returns to the Wolves after previously coaching the club between 2012 and 2016.
Bauer, his predecessor, was relieved of his duties following Wolfsburg's Matchday 25 loss to Hamburg.
Upon the announcement, Wolfsburg sporting director Pirmin Schwegler said, "Dieter Hecking brings exactly the experience we need in the current situation. He knows the club, the environment, and the demands of the Bundesliga very well. We are convinced that with his composure, expertise, and clear vision, he will give the team the necessary stability to achieve our common goal of staying in the league."
Meanwhile, Hecking said, "Returning to Wolfsburg means a lot to me. I experienced an intense and successful time here [in the first spell] and know the quality and energy this club possesses. Now it’s important to fully focus on the upcoming tasks and join forces to stay in the Bundesliga.”
During his previous four-year stint, Hecking led Wolfsburg to their only ever DFB Cup trophy in 2014/15, while also masterminding a second-placed Bundesliga finish the same season. Having also coached the likes of Hannover and Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hecking was last employed at Bochum before leaving at the start of the current season.
His first assignment will be a tricky trip to high-flying Hoffenheim. As it stands, Wolfsburg are 17th, two points adrift of the relegation play-off spot with nine games remaining.
