Bundesliga top scorer race: Harry Kane leads pack of sensational scorers

whatsappmailcopy-link

Harry Kane, Serhou Guirassy, Loïs Openda, Leroy Sané and several others are in contention to succeed Christopher Nkunku and Niclas Füllkrug as Bundesliga top scorer in 2023/24. bundesliga.com runs through the net-bulging candidates.

Harry Kane
Club: Bayern Munich
Position: Striker
Goals: 18
Appearances: 12

He came promising goals - and goals he has certainly delivered. The fanfare surrounding England captain Kane's arrival had barely died down by the time he began regularly triggering the sound of the Can-Can, his new club's goal music.

The 30-year-old has been in stunning form, barely pausing to catch his breath as he continues to find the back of the net at an alarming rate. He already has three hat-tricks to his name, following up three-goal hauls against Bochum on Matchday 5 and Darmstadt on Matchday 9 with a trio of strikes in his maiden Klassiker as Bayern defeated Borussia Dortmund 4-0. Such has been the level of his finishing, he had scored on more occasions in his opening 11 Bundesliga matches than any other player in the competition's history. One thing is for sure - Die Roten's no.9 will take some stopping, with his unquenchable hunger for goals producing one more in Bayern's 1-0 win at Cologne - making him the most prolific Englishman in a single Bundesliga season, with 22 games still to be played.

Serhou Guirassy
Club: VfB Stuttgart
Position: Striker
Goals: 16
Appearances: 11

There are great starts to the season and then there are Serhou Guirassy starts to the season! The Stuttgart striker has long been regarded as a talented attacker, but barely anybody could have expected such a prolific scoring run to thrust him to the front of the top goalscorers' race.

A brace in Stuttgart's season opener to Bochum has been followed by goals in all but one appearance since - including two brilliant hat-tricks in a 3-1 win at Mainz and victory at home to Wolfsburg by the same score. That treble took Guirassy into the history books - surpassing Robert Lewandowski's previous Bundesliga best of 11 goals in the first seven matches of a season. Guirassy's progress was stunted by an injury he suffered on Matchday 8 against Union Berlin - a game in which he scored - but the setback didn't keep him out of action for long. Guirassy was back doing what he has become accustomed to on Matchday 11, scoring the winner in Stuttgart's 2-1 win against Borussia Dortmund from the penalty spot. He was left out in favour of Deniz Undav in a 2-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt, but was back to partner Undav for the first time in Matchday 13 and took his tally to 16 already with a cool penalty that secured a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen.

Loïs Openda
Club: RB Leipzig
Position: Striker
Goals: 10
Appearances: 13

Openda had big shoes to fill this season following Christopher Nkunku's departure to Chelsea during the summer transfer window, but has has hit the ground running for his new club.

The Belgium international scored on his Bundesliga debut in the 3-2 opening-day defeat to Bayer Leverkusen and has since gone from strength to strength. He netted back-to-back braces on Matchday 8 and Matchday 9 while he scored a crucial spot-kick as Leipzig enjoyed a 3-1 victory against Freiburg on Matchday 11. The tidy penalty that opened the scoring in a 2-1 win over Heidenheim on Matchday 13 moved the Belgian into double figures.

Jonas Wind
Club: Wolfsburg
Position: Striker
Goals: 9
Appearances: 13

Wolfsburg went somewhat under the radar when starting the season solidly, and Wind has been his side's go-to marksman. Last season, he managed six goals in 24 top-flight appearances, and he surpassed that tally this campaign after just six matches.

Die Wölfe won their first games 2-0 and 2-1 against Heidenheim and Cologne respectively, with the Dane scoring all four of his team's goals. Another strike against Union Berlin and a third brace of the campaign versus Frankfurt, as well as an effort against Augsburg on Matchday 9 and opener against Leipzig on Matchday 12 have kept Wind ticking along at a good rate.

Leroy Sané
Club: Bayern Munich
Position: Winger
Goals: 8
Appearances: 12

Kane might have hogged the headlines since his summer transfer from Tottenham, but his arrival has also coincided with an incredible upswing in form from Leroy Sané.

The former Manchester City man - the only player among the top five who's not an out-and-out striker - has eight goals to his name, including a brace in the 8-0 win against Darmstadt. He has also managed six assists - making him joint-top of that Bundesliga category - and looks close to unplayable right now.

Also on eight goals - Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen) and Deniz Undav (VfB Stuttgart)
