Cologne climb above Werder Bremen after crucial win in relegation six-pointer
Cologne secured a vital 3-1 home win over ten-man Bremen after strikes from Said El Mala, Ragnar Ache and a late Mio Backhaus own goal. The result moves Cologne nine points clear of the automatic relegation spots.

With both teams hovering precariously above the relegation zone, Sunday's clash between 15th-placed Cologne and 14th-placed Werder Bremen carried enormous significance in the fight for Bundesliga survival.
The hosts entered the match winless in eight league games but had shown resilience, recovering points from losing positions nine times this season. Bremen, meanwhile, had found some form under new coach Daniel Thioune, winning three of their last five matches and their previous two away games after a 10-game winless streak on the road.
Early penalty gives Cologne the advantage
Cologne made the perfect start when El Mala converted from the penalty spot after just seven minutes. The spot-kick was awarded when Bremen's Olivier Deman fouled Jakub Kamiński in the area, and El Mala made no mistake, sending Backhaus the wrong way.
The visitors' afternoon went from bad to worse in the 24th minute when captain Marco Friedl received a straight red card for denying Ragnar Ache a clear goalscoring opportunity after slipping and bringing down the Cologne forward who was clean through on goal.
Ache extends lead after red card turning point
With the numerical advantage, Cologne dominated possession and created numerous chances, forcing Backhaus into several important saves before half-time. The Billy Goats thought they had doubled their lead shortly after the restart when Alessio Castro-Montes, who had replaced Kristoffer Lund at the break, finished neatly from Ache's through ball, but VAR ruled the goal out for a marginal offside.
Cologne's pressure finally told in the 65th minute when Ache stabbed home from close range after Backhaus had saved his initial header following Cenk Özkacar's effort striking the post.
Bremen battle back but can't complete comeback
Despite being a man down, Bremen refused to surrender and were handed a lifeline in the 76th minute when Ache, already on a yellow card, fouled Deman in the box. Romano Schmid stepped up to convert the penalty confidently, setting up a tense finale. Luca Waldschmidt, who had replaced Ache, nearly restored Cologne's two-goal cushion when his sublime long-range effort crashed against the crossbar.
Bremen pushed forward in search of an unlikely equaliser but were caught out in the seventh minute of stoppage time when Backhaus, who had made several impressive saves throughout, unfortunately turned the ball into his own net to seal a 3-1 victory for Cologne.
Man of the match: Saïd El Mala
El Mala delivered a match-winning performance for Cologne, setting the tone with his confidently taken penalty in the seventh minute. The winger was a constant threat with his pace, clocking the highest speed of any player in the match at 35.91 km/h.
El Mala created several chances for his teammates and tested Backhaus with a well-struck effort in the 42nd minute. Although he was substituted in the 67th minute after showing signs of cramping, his contribution was crucial in securing three vital points for the Billy Goats in their battle against relegation.
