Felix Nmecha: Borussia Dortmund's midfield lynchpin ready to lead

Since arriving at Borussia Dortmund from Wolfsburg, Felix Nmecha’s importance has continued to grow. Now entering his fourth season at Signal Iduna Park, he is ready to take on an even more central role for club and country alike.

Nmecha has long since been viewed as one of Germany’s most talented central midfielders. He was just 18 when he made his senior debut for Manchester City, then reigning English Premier League champions, and helped the club win the U21 Premier League title.

His time at Wolfsburg, from 2021 to 2023, allowed him to showcase his impressive physical and technical abilities regularly, and within just two seasons he was on the move to Dortmund as the Black-Yellows attempted to replace Jude Bellingham.

Nmeche needed some time to settle into his new surroundings, though. In 2023/24, his maiden campaign, he managed just 10 Bundesliga starts, struggling to nail down a spot in the starting line-up under Edin Terzić following a mix of injury issues and patchy form.

During their run to the UEFA Champions League final that season, he amassed only 85 knockout minutes and remained an unused substitute for the final. As such, it appeared both Nmecha and BVB had bitten off more than they could chew.

Speaking during the early stages of the 2024/25 term, Nmecha discussed the comparisons with his predecessor: “I expected to be compared to [Jude] Bellingham given I arrived in his position at the same time he left. However, I don’t really compare myself to other players. I try to focus as much on myself as possible.”

Those words were indictive of his strong mentality, which he carried into the next two campaigns. His second term saw him make 26 league appearances, a number that would have been higher had a ligament injury not restricted his development, and his goal and assist on Matchday 34 against Holstein Kiel was a late reminder of his ability to influence matches.

The arrival of Niko Kovač midway through that season ultimately proved to be a big influence on Nmecha. In 2025/26, as Dortmund registered their highest Bundesliga points total in seven years, the 25-year-old played more minutes across all competitions than all of the club’s midfielders – even after a ligament issue curtailed his contributions.

An integral part of Die Schwarzgelben’s fortunes last term, he was a leading performer in several categories; only Waldemar Anton and Nico Schlotterbeck completed a higher percentage of their passes than his 87.97, while the same duo were the only ones to win more than his 237 duels.

What makes Felix Nmecha so good?

Underlining his composure in possession and ability to glide past players, he completed 73.7 percent of his attempted dribbles. All of this convinced Dortmund to extend his contract in March of this year to keep him at the club until 2030.

Upon the announcement, Kovač showered Nmecha in praise: “Felix is a key player in this team. Everyone can improve. Felix is at a good age. He is slowly reaching his peak.

“He's a player who can be even more dangerous in front of goal. Hard work pays off for both the individual and the team.”

He was not the only head coach to value him, either. Having made only a smattering of Germany appearances before the end of the season, Julian Nagelsmann named him in his FIFA World Cup 2026 squad, where he started all four games.

It was hardly a stellar tournament for Germany as they crashed out at the round of 32 stage, but Nmecha was one of the team’s stand-out players. He opened Germany’s account for the tournament with a fantastic goal against Curaçao and also provided an assist, while he then set up Deniz Undav’s winner against Côte d'Ivoire.

Now back at Dortmund following a post-World Cup break, Nmecha finds himself as one of BVB’s leaders in the dressing room. Comparative veterans such as Julian Brandt and Niklas Süle have departed.

At the same time, at the start of the campaign at least, other stalwarts like club captain Emre Can and Schlotterbeck are unavailable due to injury. With some  youthful signings arriving over the summer, Nmecha will now be a senior voice in the dressing room and will need to take on a bigger role.

For Germany, too, things have changed. Jürgen Klopp is now in the hot seat, and it remains to be seen how his team will look moving forward.

Nmecha, though, has grown immeasurably since his initial steps at Dortmund and now appears ready to step up and be counted both at club and international level.
