Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig to contest 2022 Supercup
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich will compete for the 2022 Supercup against DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig on Saturday 30 July.
The match traditionally takes place at the home of the cup holders – or the Bundesliga runners-up, in the case a team wins the double – so the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig will host the season's curtain raiser.
Bayern are the two-time defending champions in the Supercup after a 3-1 victory away at Borussia Dortmund in last season’s edition saw them retain the trophy. After winning their 10th consecutive Bundesliga title, the Munich club get to compete in the Supercup for the 11th straight year and have the chance of claiming it for the 10th time overall, up against the team coach Julian Nagelsmann left just a year ago.
Watch: Bayern won their ninth Supercup with victory in Dortmund last season
As for Leipzig, they will be making their debut in the traditional season-opening fixture after they won the first major trophy in their 13-year history by lifting the DFB Cup after penalties against Freiburg. The first competitive fixture for Domenico Tedesco’s side after that victory in Berlin will be the chance for more silverware with the Supercup.
The match comes the week before the 2022/23 Bundesliga season gets under way, with champions Bayern kicking things off on Friday, 5 August. The new DFB Cup campaign begins on the weekend of the Supercup, but Bayern and holders Leipzig’s first-round fixtures will be pushed back to Tuesday 30/Wednesday 31 August.
