Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies reveals mental struggles through injury break
Alphonso Davies faces a long route back to action for Bayern Munich since tearing a cruciate ligament when playing for Canada against the USA in March. The 24-year-old has documented his challenges in coming to terms with the situation in a revealing video.
The 18-minute video blog - posted on his personal YouTube channel - starts with Davies expressing disappointment soon after suffering the first major injury of his career, but reflecting: "At the end of the day, this is the game we play. These things happen."
While he speaks about the value of keeping a positive mindset during his recovery, in the knowledge he is unlikely to appear again until some time in the 2025/26 season, the regular updates soon make clear that the injury is providing a major psychological challenge in addition to the physical burden.
Davies speaks through and demonstrates the loneliness of waiting around a hospital bed, the physical toll of treatment and the impact of struggles to walk.
At one stage in the first few days after sustaining the injury, Davies admits: "I'm not going to lie, that was hard. I had a mental breakdown. I don't know what came over me. I went to take a shower, and I just broke down in tears and panic."
The overall impression of the remarkably insightful video is of the resilience of Davies as he takes the long road to recovery step by step. He says he will spend time improving his German, other language skills and piano playing during the time off playing duties.
The full-back also reflects on the disappointment of watching Bayern exit the UEFA Champions League against Inter Milan in the quarter-finals and the success of their title-winning Bundesliga campaign.
bundesliga.com would like to wish Alphonso the very best in the remainder of his recovery, and we look forward to seeing him back in action soon!
