Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich suffer chastening UEFA Champions League defeat to Barcelona

xwhatsappmailcopy-link

Robert Lewandowski and Hansi Flick returned to haunt Bayern Munich as a Raphinha-inspired Barcelona inflicted a second defeat in three UEFA Champions League games on Vincent Kompany’s side.

Barcelona 4-1 Bayern Munich
Goals: 1-0 Raphinha 1' (assist: López), 1-1 Kane 18' (assist: Gnabry), 2-1 Lewandowski 36' (assist: López), 3-1 Raphinha 45' (assist: Casado), 4-1 Raphinha 56' (assist: Yamal)

Beaten 1-0 at Aston Villa last time out, Bayern were up against it from the get-go in the Catalan capital as Raphinha capitalised on defensive uncertainty to race clear and round Manuer Neuer for 1-0 with barely a minute on the clock. Bayern responded through Harry Kane, who had a goal ruled out for offside before smartly volleying in a Serge Gnabry cross to level. Former Bayern No.9 Lewandowski went within a whisker of restoring Barca’s lead in the 26th minute, but made no mistake with his next effort after the visiting defence had been undone by another searching long ball. It got worse still for the record champions as Raphinha thundered in a third goal on the stroke of half-time.

João Palhinha fired off a warning shot soon after the restart, but couldn't find the target. Barcelona went one better as the unplayable Raphinha raced onto Lamine Yamal's clever pass and fired beyond Neuer to complete his hat-trick. Kompany responded by introducing Jamal Musiala as part of a quartet of changes. Two of the new faces combined with 66 minutes gone, but Kingsley Coman failed to keep his shot down after collecting a pass from Leroy Sané on the edge of the Barca area. That was as close as Bayern went to troubling the home side, who were unlucky not to add a fifth through Lewandowski late on. The result leaves Bayern on three points from as many league round fixtures, ahead of home games against Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain.

Match stats

  • Bayern have scored 38 goals, whilst conceding 14 in their first 11 competitive games under Kompany.
  • This was their second - and heaviest - defeat since the Belgian replaced Thomas Tuchel as head coach.
  • Bayern have lost their last three away games in the Champions League.
  • Ex-Munich head coach Flick boasts the best win percentage (81.9 per cent) of any Bayern boss in history, winning seven trophies during a 19-month spell.
  • Lewandowski is second on Bayern's all-time scoring chart with 344 goals. He scored for the first time in three attempts against his former club as a Barca player.
  • Raphinha is the fourth player in Champions League history to score a hat-trick against Bayern, after Roy Makaay, Sergio Aguero and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

Laimer's on at right-back for Bayern, with Guerreiro hooked. Lewandowski is one of three Barca players to make way, alongside Yamal and Pedri. He didn't celebrate his goal against his old flame - and might have had one or two more.

Almost a fifth!

Well beaten

It's a rare sight, but Bayern just don't look like they know how to get back into this. They want this to end, so they can focus on Sunday's trip to Bochum.

Standing ovation

Raphinha laps it up. On comes Dani Olmo, who hit a hat-trick of his own against Bayern for former club Leipzig in the 2023 Supercup.

Hat-trick hero

Bayern haven't been able to get near Raphinha tonight. He's just the fourth player in Champions League history to score a hat-trick against Bayern, after Roy Makaay, Sergio Aguero and Cristiano Ronaldo

Barca are back in front, thanks to another dose of uncertain Bayern defending. Lamine's long pass finds López, who clips past the on-rushing Neuer. Lewandowski reacts fastest, and cannot miss.

Neuer's under pressure and can only hit his rushed clearance at Lamine. Luckily for him, the rebound goes behind.

Blocked!

A home shirt gets in the way of Olise's goal-bound strike from range. He looks a real threat whenever in possession...
18'

Like a hurri-KANE!

High lines

Bayern are seeing more of the ball and look capable of punishing Barca's high line, but they also look vulnerable, as has been the case so often this season, of being hit on the break themselves.

Kane was in an offside position. Routine decision.

The Lewy factor

Lewandowski scored 344 goals in 375 competitive appearances for Bayern, but is yet to fire in two against his former club as a Barca player. Let's hope it's not a case of third time lucky tonight!

Mixed results for Bundesliga clubs

Stuttgart won at Juventus yesterday, but Dortmund were soundly beaten by holders Real. Leverkusen - the only remaining unbeaten German club in this season's Champions League - are currently being held to a 1-1 draw at Brest...

Level

Barca fell to Monaco, before routing Young Boys. Bayern tonked Dinamo, but went down 1-0 at Villa, putting them level on three points with the Catalans.

Stars on show

Surely you don't need you appetite whetting any more for tonight's Champions League spectacular, but just in case, here's Bayern coach Vincent Kompany: "All the positive statistics you can list about us can also be listed for Barça. That's what makes the game so exciting. The fans shouldn't come to watch the coaches' tactics but to marvel at the talent that the players show on the pitch. That's what makes it really exciting."

Musiala makes plane

Jamal Musiala missed Bayern's 4-0 win over Stuttgart with a hip problem, but the 21-year-old joined the travelling party bound for Barcelona and sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed he took part in the team's final training session before the tie and suggested he may recover in time to start.

Flick: "Bayern are always dominant"

"Bayern always has a dominant way of playing," explains Flick. "Bayern always imposes a dominant style of play and this year, they have that also... They impose their style, their idea, with the enormous quality they have, which has always been the case. That is within their DNA."

Flick: "I have great memories of Bayern"

"I was [at Bayern] as a player and a coach, and I was successful," reflects Flick. "It was a great time, I have great memories, but I'm now living a new chapter at Barcelona."

Flick: "Kompany doing an outstanding job"

Flick is full of praise for his counterpart, saying: "Bayern have been playing very good football this season. Vincent Kompany and his coaching staff are doing an outstanding job. They play in a very brave way, press very high, are good in possession."

Flick: "Bayern a top team with great players"

"Up next is Bayern Munich, a team which is in good form and will have a lot of confidence," starts Flick. "They are a top, top team with great players. It's what we want, of course, we want to test ourselves against the best."

Watch: Bayern 4-0 Stuttgart - highlights

Harry Kane hit a hattrick as Bayern overwhelmed Stuttgart in the second-half.

A familiar face

Kompany and Bayern will face off against former coach Hansi Flick, who won this tournament during his trophy-laden spell as head coach in Bavaria. This will be Flick's first time facing his former side.
camera-photo

Kompany on the loss to Villa

Following his side's loss in the previous round, coach Kompany was naturally disappointed but aware that sometimes these things happen in football: "We had big chances that we didn't take... it's bitter, but this is football. But this doesn't decide the Champions League today, we have to keep going."

Domestic form

Bayern have won three of their last five league games, while drawing the other two. Barcelona have won four of their last five, losing the other. Both have won their most recent league fixtures against Stuttgart (4-0) and Sevilla (5-1) respectively.

Bayern looking to bounce back

Bayern come into this game on the back of a defeat in their previous Champions League tie against Aston Villa. Barcelona on the other hand, come into this fixture on the back of a 5-0 victory against Swiss side Young Boys.

Olise tearing it up

With question marks over Jamal Musiala's fitness for this huge showdown, one man who could definitely bring the spark going forward for Bayern is Michael Olise, who has been on a tear since leaving Crystal Palace for Bavaria - via a silver medal with France at the Paris Olympics. With is goals and three assists across all competitions, the 22-year-old winger is certainly one to watch.
camera-photo

The fateful eight

Lewandowski is one of just eight men to have played for both of these European giants, and what a list it is: Thiago Alcántara, Arturo Vidal, Pepe Reina, Philippe Coutinho, Mark van Bommel, João Cancelo and Patrik Andersson.
camera-photo

Ties that bind

One of those eight goals was scored by the inevitable Robert Lewandowski who, despite having swapped the Allianz Arena for the Camp Nou in 2022, remains Bayern's all-time top scorer in the Champions League with no fewer than 69 goals. And Bayern's coach on that night in Lisbon, Hansi Flick, is now the string-puller in the Barcelona dugout.
camera-photo

Advantage Bayern

Despite the decidedly rich nature of the pedigrees on either side of this heavyweight fixture at the Camp Nou, the German giants carry a large head-to-head advantage into the clash: 10 wins, one draw and just two defeats against the Catalans, scoring 33 goals in the process - eight of which came in just one match (8-2 in Lisbon in the 2019/20 quarter-finals).
