Arsenal and Leverkusen headed into their Champions League Round of 16 second leg with the tie delicately poised following a 1-1 draw in Germany. Mikel Arteta made four changes to his Arsenal side that defeated Everton 2-0 at the weekend, with Ben White, Piero Hincapié, Leandro Trossard, and Viktor Gyökeres all returning to the starting lineup. Former Arsenal loanee Kai Havertz dropped to the bench despite scoring in the first leg.
For Leverkusen, Kasper Hjulmand fielded the same team that started the first leg, with Alejandro Grimaldo returning after missing their weekend draw against Bayern Munich through suspension. Christian Kofane, Exequiel Palacios and Ibrahim Maza also returned to the starting XI.
Eze breaks the deadlock with a stunner
Leverkusen started confidently with an early corner, but Arsenal gradually took control of proceedings. The home side's first real chance came in the 15th minute when Leandro Trossard forced a smart save from Janis Blaswich.
As the half wore on, Blaswich emerged as Leverkusen's hero, making several crucial interventions to deny Trossard, Saka, and White.
Arsenal's pressure eventually told in the 36th minute when Eberechi Eze produced a moment of magic. Receiving the ball from Trossard on the edge of the box, Eze turned sharply and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner, leaving Blaswich with no chance. Arsenal continued to press but couldn't extend their lead before half-time.
Rice seals the tie for Arsenal
Leverkusen quickly found themselves on the back foot again after the break, and after 63 minutes, Arsenal doubled their lead. After Leverkusen failed to clear their lines, Declan Rice picked up the ball outside the box and curled a precise shot into the bottom corner.
Arsenal thought they had a third when substitute Havertz bundled the ball home, but the goal was disallowed for handball. Leverkusen's best chance came late on when Kofane tested David Raya with a powerful shot, but the Arsenal goalkeeper made an excellent save to preserve his clean sheet.
Bayern will now attempt to follow Arsenal through as the Bundesliga's sole representative in the quarter-finals. The Bundesliga leaders lead Italy's Atalanta 6-1 in their tie ahead of the return leg in Munich.
