Schreuder will link up with the national team for their upcoming friendly matches against Switzerland and Ghana, scheduled to take place at the end of March. From there, he will remain a member of Germany's coaching team until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup

The 53-year-old will be a familiar face to Hoffenheim fans, after taking charge of the Sinsheim club for the 2019/20 Bundesliga season. Prior to that, he worked under Nagelsmann as Hoffenheim assistant, and will now assume a similar role for Germany.

"I had a very trusting and successful working relationship with Julian Nagelsmann at Hoffenheim. As a young coach, I was impressed by his courage, ambition, and expertise," Schreuder said.

"We've always stayed in good contact since then. It's a great honour for me that Julian and his team asked me to support them at the World Cup."

In 2022, Schreuder joined Belgian side Club Brugge as head coach, winning the Belgian Pro League at the first attempt. A spell at Dutch giants Ajax followed, although he left the club after just six months at the helm. In December of last year, Schreuder was appointed head coach of Saudi club Al-Diriyah, where he remains under contract.

Encouragingly for Germany fans, Schreuder has also enjoyed success as an assistant, having been a coach at Barcelona during the side's Spanish Cup triumph in 2021.

"I greatly value Alfred [Schreuder] as a coach and as a person. His experience is a tremendous asset to our team with a view to the upcoming FIFA World Cup," Nagelsmann explained.

"We chose him as an additional expert so that Mads Buttgereit can fully concentrate on set pieces in training. We expect set pieces to be even more important at this World Cup. Therefore, we want to place a greater focus on them in training and preparation."
