Bundesliga sees most number of single-season goals in almost 30 years
The likes of Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland, Timo Werner and Jadon Sancho more than played their part as the Bundesliga witnessed more single-season goals in 2019/20 than it has in almost 30 years.
A total of 982 goals were recorded in 306 fixtures across 34 Matchdays, with champions Bayern Munich accounting for 100 of them.
It is the highest season total tally since 1991/92, when 994 goals fell over 38 rounds of fixtures.
The collective efforts over the course of the recently ended campaign - comprising Lewandowski’s league-leading 34 goals, Haaland’s record seven efforts in his first three appearances, Werner’s career-best 28 strikes and Sancho's mid-season burst of 11 goals and as many assists across 16 games - also ensured the Bundesliga maintained it’s healthy average of over three goals per game since the league’s inception in 1963 - 3.06 to be precise.
A mean number of 3.20 goals per game represents a rise of 0.03 compared to last season.
The lowest average on record is 2.58 (790 in 1989/90), while 1983/84 remains the most prolific campaign on record (1097 goals at an average of 3.58 per game).
Across all 57 Bundesliga seasons to date, there have been a total of 53,196 goals in 17,386 matches.
