Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Leverkusen

"We're going to need a top performance if we're going to hold our own against Leverkusen, which we've done on a number of occasions in seasons gone by. Special performances stem from team spirit, unity and fight. We want to display those qualities together on Saturday."

Carles Martínez on facing Stuttgart

"Stuttgart's recent results don't change anything, as far as I'm concerned. They're a very good team, a tough side who we've struggled to beat in recent years. There are always good and bad days when it comes to results, but they have a clear identity."

Undav to the rescue

Deniz Undav scored the only goal in second-half stoppage time as Stuttgart reached the DFB Cup last 16 with victory over Paderborn, who had Laurin Curda sent off eight minutes before half-time.

Werkself survive cup scare

Leverkusen needed three late goals to get the better of Nuremberg in the DFB Cup on Wednesday. The Bundesliga 2 side had led 2-1 at half-time but ended up losing 5-2 at the BayArena.

Stuttgart's slow start

With two wins and five defeats, Stuttgart have made their worst start to a season since Sebastian Hoeneß took charge in April 2023. This time last term, they'd recorded five wins and two losses. A third straight league reverse this weekend would be an unwanted first on Hoeneß's watch.

Eleventh time unlucky

Leverkusen had scored at least twice in all 10 competitive games under Carles Martínez prior to their 3-0 loss at Hoffenheim. Die Werkself last lost back-to-back Bundesliga matches in January, going down 4-1 at home to Stuttgart and 1-0 in Hoffenheim.

Watch: Stuttgart 2-3 Gladbach - last time out

VfB's shaky start to the season continued as they lost at home to rock-bottom Gladbach, who had previously failed to pick up a single point.
2:03

Watch: Hoffenheim 3-0 Leverkusen - last time out

Leverkusen lost ground on the top three as they suffered a resounding reverse in Hoffenheim, bringing their five-match unbeaten league run to an abrupt halt.

Watch: Stuttgart 3-1 Leverkusen - previous meeting

These two sides were locked in a battle for UEFA Champions League qualification when they last met in May of this year. On that occasion, Stuttgart prevailed to give themselves the advantage heading into the final weekend of the campaign.
