Watch: Top 5 goals from Matchday 7

camera-photo

Full-time: Wolfsburg 0-3 VfB Stuttgart

One-way traffic at the Volkswagen Arena as Stuttgart depart with all three points. Tiago Tomás - against his former club - Maximilian Mittelstädt and Angelo Stiller were the goalscorer for the visitors, while the hosts offered very little going forward. The perfect way to return from the international break for Stuttgart.

Koulierakis has a chance to net a consolation, but his header is straight at Nübel.

Points secured

Stuttgart add extra gloss to the scoreline through Stiller, who breaks into the box and slots past Grabara. Wolfsburg continue to have absolutely no answer today.

Post!

Wind hits the woodwork! In all fairness, it was from a very tight angle - hitting the woodwork was actually the best result he could hope for.

Well over

Skov Olsen's attempt is far beyond the upright.

Roll of the dice

Simonis makes three changes as he looks to change the game's momentum.

Undav back

The striker is back on the pitch after missing the last four games. It is a good situation for him to make his return in.

Struggling

Wolfsburg just haven't got going in this one. They need some fresh impetus from somewhere.
60'

Over

The next Stuttgart effort falls to Andrés, whose first-time effort flies narrowly over the crossbar.

Save

Mittelstädt is looking for a second. This attempt was too central, allowing Grabara to gather, but Stuttgart continue to threaten.

Dominant

Stuttgart have been on top throughout this and have had opportunities to be even further in front.

Two to the good

Stuttgart now have breathing space! A quick move down the right is only half cleared by Wolfsburg, and the left-back is on hand to fire home as the ball bounces to him in the box. Wolfsburg's task just got harder.

Half-time: Wolfsburg 0-1 VfB Stuttgart

The visitors are in front at the break, and deservedly so. Stuttgart dominated in almost every aspect, and they have the lead through Tiago Tomás' header. Wolfsburg, in response, managed just two shots in the first half - they must do better after the interval to get back into this one.

Opportunity

The ball falls to Mittelstädt on the edge of the box, but he doesn't quite connect with it as he no doubt would have liked. In the end, though, Grabara still has to make a save.

Stuttgart in front!

Against his former club, Tomás gives the visitors the lead. A Mittelstädt cross into the box finds the Portuguese unmarked, and he heads past Grabara. Deserved.

Chance!

Now Wolfsburg have their first real opening at the other end. Svanberg is released and opens his body to find the bottom corner, but the angle is relatively tight and it is a simple save for Nübel.

Great save!

Andrés is unmarked when he heads towards goal from eight yards, but it is a brilliant stop from Grabara to keep the game level. Chabot then heads past the post from the resulting corner. Stuttgart are starting to exert more pressure now.

Danish dynamite!

More on those teams

Visitors VfB have Deniz Undav in their squad for the first time since the end of August. Nikolas Nartey, meanwhile, makes his first Bundesliga start since May 2023. Recent signing Christian Eriksen is making his very first start for the Wolves today and is one of three changes for the hosts, who also bring in Jonas Wind and Aaron Zehnter.

Paul Simonis on facing Stuttgart

"They’re a great team that usually have a lot of possession, they’re very aggressive when they don’t have the ball and they win a lot of duels. We know they’re a strong opponent.”
camera-photo

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Wolfsburg

“They‘re a team that, in my view, have enormous attacking potential. They have a strong squad and have created the most clear-cut chances in the Bundesliga, but haven’t done as much with them. We’re also in the conversation of less efficient teams, but they play with good speed and strength.”

Tomás doesn't see himself as the striker solution

Given the injuries to strikers Ermedin Demirović and Deniz Undav, who is at least approaching a comeback, Tomás was asked about which position he feels most comfortable playing “I don’t think I’m a striker," the Portuguese attacker said. "I can be a forward - an attacking option - but I don’t think I’m a striker. I can play in every position in attack. Normally if I play as an out-and-out striker, I like to play with someone by my side. I think the last few years I’ve been feeling more comfortable as a winger, which is the position I’ve been playing in the last few games."
camera-photo

Tomás on his decision to rejoin Stuttgart

“Honestly, because I felt a big connection with the club when I was here. First of all, they believed in me in a difficult moment in Portugal. And then I think I developed a lot as a player, because Portugal was all I’d known until then. And then I had a whole new reality in front of me. It was really a big connection that I made. My family also moved in the beginning with me and we made good memories here – not only with the club but in the city and everything, with the people. And then watching the last two years and how the club itself grew and how the goals changed in the last two years."

Tomás reflects on Stuttgart's start to the season

“I’ve heard some people saying we were struggling, but I think it’s normal when you have so many new players. Also some players that left were here for a long time, so I think it’s normal. You need the time to have the consistency in your performance. If during this process you have the wins that we’ve had, then I don’t think you’re struggling at all. I think it’s part of the process and we need to face it naturally. I think being in fourth place now is a positive start to the season. I’m just excited for what’s next, because I think we’re growing as a team. I think it was a positive start.”
camera-photo

Tiago Tomás on facing former side Wolfsburg

“Obviously it's always a different feeling when you play against a club you've represented. I felt the same last year when I played against Stuttgart. It will be nice to play again in the same stadium I was playing in last year and to see so many familiar faces and friends – really good friends that I made there. I’m just excited to see all the people, to play against them. Hopefully this time we will win, though I will of course be on the other side. It will be a special match for me.”

Contrasting fortunes

While Stuttgart have won three in a row, Wolfsburg have lost their last three. Defeats to Dortmund, Leipzig and Augsburg have them in desperate need of a morale-boosting win, although two of those losses were by a single-goal margin.
camera-photo

Three's the magic number

After three consecutive Bundesliga wins, Sebastian Hoeneß's men are now just two points behind second-placed Dortmund and will see this as a great opportunity to continue sneaking up the table.
