Full-time: Freiburg 3-1 VfB Stuttgart

Freiburg's stunning second-half comeback secures all three points for Julian Schuster. Ermedin Demirović' first-half opener, a lovely backheeled effort into the corner, looked for so long as if it would be enough for the win. However, in the final quarter-hour, Freiburg scored three times - twice through Igor Matanović and once through Derry Scherhant, both substitutes - to complete an incredible turnaround. Johan Manzambi was sent off in the final minutes of injury time, but it was not enough to stop Freiburg from picking up their first points of the term.

A high boot from the midfielder on Hendriks sees him given his marching orders. It is unlikely to have an impact on the outcome, though.

What a comeback from Freiburg, who are now in front! Scherhant is the goalscorer, scoring at the second attempt after Nübel had kept out his initial try. Where has this come from?!

All square

Matanović was brought on to change things for Freiburg, and he has done just that with a fantastic goal, side-footing into the far corner via the post from Kübler's cross. This is his debut - what better way to introduce yourself!

Only a Stiller slide and block stops Manzambi from working Nübel. There is plenty more threat from Freiburg now.

Save

Nübel needs to be alert to keep out Kübler's effort on the volley. That was better from Schuster's men. Shortly after, he tries his luck once more, but on this occasion his attempt is well over the crossbar.

Half-time: Freiburg 0-1 VfB Stuttgart

The first half comes to an end with the visitors in front. It was not the best half of football, with both teams struggling to create many chances, but a moment of brilliance from Ermedin Demirović - formerly of Freiburg - gave Stuttgart the lead. Freiburg are in danger of losing a third consecutive game at the start of a Bundesliga season for the first time since 1995, so they will be eager to get back into this one after the break.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Neither outfit has had many major chances in this one. Stuttgart, though, have found the back of the net with an opportunity of theirs.

Unlucky

Manzambi does really well to control the ball, shift it on to his left foot and fire a shot off. It is deflected behind for a corner that comes to nothing.

Header

Stuttgart looks confident, and after a quick counter-attack, Vagnoman is found at the back post. It seems he wasn't expecting it, though, as his header lacks power and causes Atubolu no problems.

What a goal!

The visitors have the opener, and it comes from a moment of magic from Demirović. After controlling Leweling's cross, the Bosnia and Herzegovina striker backheels into the corner, leaving Atubolu scrambling in vain. That was lovely.

Julian Schuster on facing Stuttgart

"Maybe the rivalry will give us even more energy. They'll also need to react to injuries and departures , but they'll have more options now that they can choose from and the international break will have been good to them in terms of preparation."

Chabot returns to the fold

The towering centre-half will be available for selection again on the weekend, as will Noah Darvich. Fabian Bredlow will be out for a while longer with a knee problem, however, while Ameen Al-Dakhil and Luca Jaquez are also not available despite participating in some training this week.

El Khannouss ready to go

Hoeneß confirmed that the new signing would be in contention for a starting place against Freiburg: "He’ll definitely be in the squad for Freiburg. He’s in a good flow and I had a very good first impression," said the Stuttgart boss. "We had a small exchange and he’s a very positive, open guy with a lot of quality on the ball.”

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Freiburg

“With two losses they haven’t had the start they’d hoped for but in their first game against Augsburg they didn’t deserve that result at all. They’re going to try and make life difficult for us, it’s in their DNA. But of course from our side, we’re going into it trying to cause them headaches.”
