Hamburg on track

Things are looking up for promoted Hamburg as they close in on a second straight season in the top flight.
camera-photo

Full-time: Mainz 1-1 Hamburg

Tietz swipes at a ball into the box in the final action of the game. Mainz, who took the lead, are three points clear of the bottom three, but with everyone else around them still to play. As for Hamburg - now six unbeaten - it's another valuable point on the road to top-flight safety.

Almost!

Nebel gets straight to work with a brilliant cross towards the back post for Becker. He catches it on the volley, missing the far corner by just a fraction. Heuer Fernandes barely moved.
88'

Shutting up shop

Defensive changes for Hamburg - are they settling for a point? Paul Nebel's come on for Lee in the Mainz attack, meanwhile.

Batz away

The Mainz goalkeeper gets two fists to Vieira's in-swinging corner. He had a horrible time of it in Dortmund last weekend, but has been very assured today.

Denied!

Tietz is played in and squares for Lee, but his strike is directed away from goal by Remberg. Brilliant defending!
76'

Attacking switch

Philippe, who scored twice in the reverse fixture, is on for Otele.
73'

Quick feet

Amiri jinks into the Hamburg area, before being crowded out in front of the six-yard box. He needed more support.
71'

Dangerous!

Mainz concede possession very cheaply in their own half. HSV work the ball to goalscorer Vieira, who tries to find the top corner from 18 yards, but places his effort too close to the goalkeeper.
66'

Momentum shift

Hamburg have their tails up as Polzin makes a change at right-back and in the attack.
camera-photo

HSV are level!

Fábio Viera steps up to take a free-kick after Potulski concedes a foul 20 yards from goal. It takes a wicked deflection off the Mainz wall, leaving Batz completely wrong-footed on its way in. A huge slice of luck, but the visiting HSV fans don't care one bit.

Across goal!

Almost a second Mainz goal as Becker's deflected cross finds Tietz on the stretch in the six-yard box, but he can't steer the ball on target.
59'

Smart move

On a yellow card, Kohr makes way for Veratschnig. Hamburg's Remberg was booked moments earlier for a high boot.
57'

A whisker away!

Capaldo takes on a loose ball on the edge of the Mainz area, with Batz at full stretch as the ball whistles just wide of the far post. Great technique!
54'

Nothing doing

Kohr catches Muheim following the corner. The HSV players want another booking for the Mainz man, but the referee waves away the appeals.
52'

Amiri halted

Omari avoids a booking after bringing down Amiri, halting the Mainz midfielder's driving run through midfield. The resultant free-kick is sent into the penalty area and put behind for a corner...
49'

Encouraging signs

Positive play from Mainz to start the second half. They're playing with real purpose as they chase the second goal.
46'

Second half

No surprise as the already booked Silas is replaced by Sheraldo Becker at the start of the second half. HSV are unchanged.

Half-time: Mainz 1-0 Hamburg

Mainz lead at the break through Amiri's well-taken volley. It was their only real chance against a Hamburg side who had looked the more likely earlier in the half.

Coaching staff Richard Krohn and Michael Silberbauer are booked after arguing over a refereeing decision. Miro Muheim then goes into the book for a foul on Silas.

Early danger

Silas bundles his way past two defenders wide on the left and whips a low cross into the box. HSV struggle to deal with it, but there's no Mainz attacker in the vicinity to be able to take advantage.

Tietz's unusual breakthrough

The striker also explained the twist of fate that saw him make the professional grade at boyhood club Eintracht Braunschweig under Torsten Lieberknecht. "I think he lived three doors down on the other side of the road," the 28-year-old said. "I used to play with my dad on the street. He’d put out cones and we’d do technique drills. Torsten then came across me at some point. He found out that I was already playing for Eintracht Braunschweig. I think that sort of led to the first steps of me getting to train with the first team. Torsten is the coach I’ll always be grateful to. There’s a special relationship between Torsten and me." That relationship continued later at Darmstadt, where the pair secured promotion to the Bundesliga in 2023, before Tietz moved to Augsburg to launch his top-flight career.

Tietz talks Hamburg

Mainz winter signing Phillip Tietz spoke about the need for defensive solidity ahead of Friday night's game against the Red Shorts. “HSV are a very good team on the counter who have good quality in attack, in one-v-ones," he said. "We need to shore things up, get stuck into tackles, bring the stadium to life, and that normally happens through the players on the pitch. We need to play with the Mainz DNA, I think that gives us a very good chance, because we’ve got really good players in the team.”
camera-photo

Urs Fischer on facing Hamburg

"HSV haven't lost any of their last five games; they're currently in good form and seem very stable. I consider them particularly dangerous in transition; they're very direct in attack and have a lot of quick players in their ranks. They're also very versatile and frequently switch positions. We have to keep that in mind while also remembering that we need to play our own game."
camera-photo

Merlin Polzin on facing Mainz

"Mainz are an established club that've been playing in the Bundesliga for almost 17 years. Last year, they deservedly qualified for European competition. After the first half of the season, they've stabilised, and if you only look at the form table, they are in a good position in sixth place since Urs Fischer became coach. They have a very compact defence, a team with a lot of stamina, and can call on size and speed from the bench."
camera-photo

HSV have found their range

The visitors have scored seven goals in their last three games, a huge improvement from the three games before that, during which they scored just once. That improved efficiency in front of goal has seen them jump up to ninth in the table.
camera-photo

Vulnerable in the air

Nine of the 11 goals Mainz have conceded so far in 2026 have been headers, a figure beefed out by the four headers they let in against Dortmund last Friday. It will be something of a relief for the home side, then, that HSV’s Luka Vušković - who has four league goals to his name this season - will be serving a one-game suspension.
camera-photo

Unprecedented form

Unbeaten in their last five Bundesliga outings, Hamburg are one of the form teams in the league. Merlin Polzin's men are the only side other than Dortmund not to have suffered a league defeat so far in the second half of the season. Now on a run of two consecutive wins, victory over Mainz would mark the first time in 15 years the Red Shorts have won three Bundelsiga games on the bounce in a single season.

Hamburg boosted their survival hopes with an impressive comeback win over Union Berlin. HSV, who have recorded five of their six Bundesliga wins so far this season at home, are now six points clear of the bottom three and have a rearranged game in hand against Bayer Leverkusen to come.
