Neuer's backing

Speaking after Wednesday's DFB Cup quarter-final, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer insisted he has no intention of reversing his international retirement and went on to give his backing to Hoffenheim's Baumann. "He's the number one now and is doing a very good job. He's producing very good performances and I've got my fingers crossed for him, wish him only the best."

Freiburg advance

The Black Forest club are through to the semi-finals of the DFB Cup for the third time in five years thanks to a shootout victory over Hertha on Tuesday. After a goalless 90 minutes in Berlin, Yuito Suzuki and Fabian Reese exchanged goals in extra-time. Pascal Klemens was the unfortunate man to miss the decisive penalty with the sixth attempt.

Baumann beginnings

Hoffenheim and Germany No.1 Oliver Baumann spent four years on the books of Freiburg, before moving to Sinsheim in summer 2014. He also won youth league and cup gold with the Black Forest club.

Hoffenheim lost their first three home games of the campaign, but have won all seven since. Eight would be a new club record in a single Bundesliga season.

The spoils were shared in the last Baden-Württemberg derby, extending Freiburg's unbeaten run in the fixture to eight Bundesliga matches (nine in all competitions). They've now won 15 all told (D13, L7).

Things unravelled pretty quickly for third-placed Hoffenheim after Kevin Akpoguma saw red just 17 minutes into their trip to leaders Bayern Munich. Christian Ilzer's side were 3-1 down at half-time, before Luis Díaz scored a couple of second-half goals to complete his hat-trick and bring the visitors' seven-game unbeaten hot streak (W6, D1) to an abrupt end.

Niklas Beste scored the only goal as Freiburg survived Johan Mazambi's 52nd-minute red card to beat lowly Werder Bremen. The seventh-placed Breisgauer have been superb at home this season (W6, D3, L1), but have won just twice on their travels (D3, L6).
