Full-time: Hamburg 3-2 Union Berlin

An electric encounter at the Volksparkstadion comes to an end with the points going the way of Hamburg. A tense second half ensued after the restart before Königsdörffer added a second deep into the half to put HSV in the driving seat. Union kept fight back, however, pulling one back late on through Ilić, but for all their fighting, it was too little, too late for Steffen Baumgart's side. Victory means Hamburg are now unbeaten in their last five Bundesliga matches.

Ilić snatches one back!

Hamburg fail to clear the ball properly at the back, following a loose pass from Burke. The Scot retrieves the ball before finding Ilić at the far post, who heads home past Heuer Fernandes. You can't say that goal had not been coming for the Union forward, who has been everywhere today for the visitors.

Königsdörffer seals the three points!

What a counter-attack from Hamburg! Vieira finds the recently substituted Gocholeishvili with a short pass. Gocholeishvili then launches a long ball forward to Königsdörffer, who brings it down excellently before finishing clinically past Rønnow from a tight angle into the far corner. That goal marks the forward's first ever Bundelsiga brace!

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The xG values indicate that Hamburg are good value for their lead, but Union are far from out of this one.

Half-time: Hamburg 2-1 Union

A fierce contest is called to a halt with Hamburg taking a 2-1 advantage into the dressing room at the break. HSV started the better of the sides but it was Querfeld who opened the scoring from the spot for the visitors. Not long after, however, Königsdörffer drew the hosts level with a clinical counter-attack. Just before the break, Ilić missed an open net before Capaldo doubly punished Union, providing Hamburg with a slender lead at the interval.

Capaldo punishes Union!

After surviving the Ilić scare, Hamburg immediately go and score up the other end! Vieira finds Muheim on the left, whose subsequent pass reaches Jatta. The wide man delivers the ball to Capaldo, who - having conceded the penalty that led to Union's opener - makes amends with a composed right-footed finish from the centre of the box. What a turnaround from the hosts!

At the back, Capaldo and Torunarigha return, whereas up top, Glatzel is given a rare start in place of the injured Sambi Lokonga in what will lead to a slight tweak to the formation, with Königsdörffer moving out wide.

Loïc Favé on facing Union

With head coach Merlin Polzin (pictured, l.) suffering with a cold during the week, his assistant Loïc Favé (pictured, r.) took over pre-match media duties: "Union Berlin have a very specific style of football. Steffen Baumgart knows exactly what characterises his team and where their strengths lie. We'll need a great deal of patience to break down such a compact side that sit deep. Their recent matches have shown that. Eintracht Frankfurt, for example, a team blessed with plenty of attacking quality, recently found it very difficult to create chances against them."
camera-photo

Baumgart on facing Hamburg...

“I never predict results. We want to win, and Hamburg want the same. Two strong teams will meet, and both will have to go to their limits. We’re still learning how to win again - but maybe we’ll manage it.”
camera-photo

Baumgart on whether he regrets his time at Hamburg…

“I don’t have any regrets at all. Hamburg was my boyhood club and will always be part of me. I got the chance to work there, but success isn’t assured in football. When results don’t come, changes happen everywhere. I remain a fan of the club. I had an intense and valuable time in Hamburg and met many great people.”
camera-photo

Baumgart on Union failing to win so far in 2026

“The biggest advantage I see is that the boys want it. We have phases in matches where things work better, and that’s normal in every team. The key is to stay true to yourself. You have to stay calm, be clear, and know where you want to start improving. That’s what we’re trying to do.”
camera-photo

Steffen Baumgart on his playing days at Union

He told the Bundesliga: “With Union, I experienced something I hadn’t experienced at any other club. My two years here as a player weren’t positive - I was relegated as captain. Yet the club had incredible cohesion. I’ve met so many people who grew up with this club from childhood - those who stood by Union in the bad times and always will. That’s what defines this club. The inner core has nothing to do with Bundesliga glamour. I remember mould on the walls and in the showers, then sitting in the coaches’ room where the wall was so thin you could hear everything the other coach said."

Counter-raiders supreme

Hamburg have scored seven goals on the counter this season, including both efforts against Heidenheim. Only leaders Bayern Munich have scored more breakaway goals (nine).
