Full-time: Mainz 1-1 Frankfurt

A thrilling Rhine-Main derby could have gone either way in the final minutes. However, because both teams lacked precision in front of goal, neither was able to make any headway in the table. Frankfurt are now two points short of securing Champions League qualification, while Mainz - who showed more hunger to win this one - remain in seventh, two points shy of sixth.

Just wide from Ekitiké!

Played in behind the defence once again, Ekitiké goes one-on-one with Rieß and produces a deft finish - that goes just the wrong side of the bar. That could so easily have been the winner - and Champions League qualifer!

Rare foray for Frankfurt

Kristensen's low cross to the near post is blocked, and Mainz clears the ball.
86'

Amiri!

Mainz take their time, working the ball around the edge of the area before Amiri turns on the afterburners and breaks into the area. But, just as he goes to shoot, a Frankfurt foot puts an end to the promising move.
83'

Mainz going for it

Henrikssen takes a last throw of the dice, bringing in fresh legs to add impetus to Mainz's bid to win this match and push on for Champions League qualification.

Burkardt goes down

The goal scorer was hit in the side by Koch's knee during an aerial duel. He shakes it off and returns to action.

Double substitution

Chaïbi and Uzun replace Bahoya and Knauff in the attacking midfield positions behind Ekitiké.

Ekitiké threatens

Just after breaking through the defence on a trademark run, Ekitiké is picked out by a long pass from Theate and breaks into the area. He looks to lob Rieß but his audacious effort goes just over the bar.

German duo

Together with Gladbach's Kleindienst, Burkardt is the most successful German goalscorer this season (16 goals each).

And Frankfurt?

The Eagles need to be more active here - they haven't bounced back since the equaliser. As things stand, qualification for the Champions League is not yet guaranteed.

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The hosts have only had two shots on goal, but they have had the better chances overall and the equaliser was fully deserved.

Mwene denied!

The next cross from the right is met by the lively Schienenspieler, but his flying header is cleared by Koch.

Sano has a crack

As Mainz grow in confidence, spurred on by a packed MEWA Arena, the Japanese player shifts into shooting position, but his aim is just wide of the near post.

Mainz's main man

Mainz equalise with their first shot on goal after the break! It was Burkardt's first shot of the game – and a club record 16th goal of the season for the Germany striker.

Burkardt bags a leveller - with his hip!

Rushing in at the far post as a cross came over the top from the right, Burkardt gets in the way as Kristensen looks to clear. The Dane's effort goes straight into the Mainz man's hip and bobbles up over Trapp and across the line. Bizarre, but Mainz aren't complaining! Game on!

Rieß vigilant

The debuting keeper has to come out of his penalty area on the left to head away a long ball from Frankfurt – and does the job with good timing.

Easy pickings

Knauff breaks down the right but crosses with more hope than accuracy – Bell is on hand to head the ball out of danger.

Mainz establishing control

The home side have been moving the ball well, enjoying an extended spell in possession as they look for that first shot on target. But Frankfurt are holding up well, defending deep and looking to hit with the counter-attacking prowess they are well known for.

Half-time: Mainz 0-1 Frankfurt

In an entertaining first half, Frankfurt took an early lead but then had problems with Mainz's attacks down the right. The 05ers kept pushing for the equaliser and coped well with the injuries to Kohr and da Costa.

More black paper balls rain down on the corner but this time there's no interruption: Amiri takes the corner quickly from the right, but once again fails to find a teammate.

More on that Frankfurt team

There is also a change in Frankfurt's starting line-up compared to last week: Kristensen returns to his usual position at right-back, with Collins starting on the bench.

More on that Mainz team

Mainz will have to do without goalkeeper Robin Zentner for the first time this Bundesliga season. Lasse Rieß will make his Bundesliga debut in Zentner's place, having previously sat on the bench for 63 games. It is the only change to Mainz's starting XI from the 3-0 defeat at Bayern a week ago.

Bo Henriksen on Frankfurt

"We know how good they are as a team. Their transition game, with three very quick players in attack, is particularly good. We need to defend against that really well, that'll be very important because of their quality. We also know we'll get chances against them. It'll be an entertaining game with plenty of goals. We're two teams on an equal footing."
camera-photo

Dino Toppmöller on Mainz

"Mainz have some great individuals across the pitch, but it'd be unfair to single them all out. They're doing really well as a team. There's continuity in the starting line-up, they're very well organised and their high press is a problem for opposition teams. They can suck you in and then it becomes difficult. We have to avoid that."

Watch: Mainz and Eintracht Frankfurt's Champions League dreams

With just three games left of the 2024/25 season, both Mainz and Eintracht Frankfurt are well placed to secure their place in next season's Champions League, and will go head to head on Matchday 32.

Mainz not out

Bo Henriksen's side have been one of the league's surprise packages this season, and are just four points off fourth place. While the Champions League dream is still alive, they're also even close to the Europa League (two points) and Europa Conference League (one point) places, meaning their season will likely have the happy ending they're hoping for; they'll have to take points from strong Eagles side first though!

Eagles still soaring

A confident 4-0 win over Champions League chasing Leipzig has put Frankfurt in a great position to qualify for that very tournament. With just three games left it's unlikely they'll drop out of the top four, but it is still mathematically possible.

Watch: Frankfurt 4-0 Leipzig - highlights

Ansgar Knauff was on target twice for an Eintracht team that swept aside top-four rivals Leipzig, with the Eagles' hold on third spot strengthened as a result.

And there's still more...

Frankfurt will secure at least sixth place and a place in next season's Conference League play-offs if they draw with Mainz, OR Dortmund lose AND Bremen don't win, OR Dortmund lose AND Leipzig don't win.

More MD32 stakes

Frankfurt will secure at least fifth place (and Europa League football for next season) if they win, OR they draw with Mainz AND Leipzig lose OR Dortmund don't win.
camera-photo

MD32 stakes

A return to the Champions League beckons for Frankfurt. They will finish no lower than fourth if they win AND Leipzig don't win OR Freiburg lose. They will still be certain of a top-four finish if they draw in Mainz AND Leipzig lose AND Dortmund don't win. Mainz could return to the top six with a win.
