Xavi - "I know his quality, he knows mine"

Full-time

Full-time: RB Leipzig 2-0 St. Pauli

Leipzig were excellent in the first half, creating chances and dominating possession. Brilliant goals from Šeško and Xavi handed the home side a comfortable lead. But Pauli didn’t stop trying and a red card for Orban threatened to make things interesting. But Leipzig were just too savvy at the back. A deserved victory.

Huge Openda miss!

Leipzig win the ball on the edge of their own box and Xavi sends a long ball over the Pauli defence to a rampant Openda, who has only the 'keeper to beat. He races into the box and pokes towards goal. Vasilj blocks, then Smith blocks and then Vasilj adds a second save as he claws away another effort.

Gulácsi on fire

One-way traffic

Pauli are dominating the ball, with Leipzig camped on the edge of their own box. The home side, down to 10 men, seem content with digging their heels in here. A Pauli goal would make things very tense.
87'

Irvine hits the target

Smith floats in a free kick from a central-right area and Irvine meets it in the air, unchalleneged, near the penalty spot. It's far too soft and too central and Gulácsi collects.

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Despite being 2-0 down, Pauli are actually ahead on xG.

Openda misfires

Pauli clear their lines and it reaches Seiwald on the edge of the box. He dinks it over the defence to Openda, who is alone in the box, onside, with only the 'keeper to beat. But Openda makes a complete hash of it, scuffing an aimless pass back into the area where it is collected by a grateful Vasilj.

Orban gets his marching orders

The skipper is off, having denied a goal-scoring opportunity.
73'

Smith fires over

Smith takes the resulting free kick, which couldn't be better placed. He gets it over the wall but it doesn't come down quickly enough and sails over the bar.
70'

Orban is off!

The captain walks after mistiming a challenge on Saad right on the edge of his own area. Xavi lost the ball in his own half and Pauli slipped through Saad, who only had the goalkeeper to beat, but he's felled by Orban. It's a goal-scoring opportunity and the ref has no choice.

Xavi celebrates his goal

The midfielder's first-half strike gave Leipzig a 2-0 lead over Pauli.
67'

Kampl rightly booked

Kampl is all over Saad in midfield, grabbing his shirt and climbing all over him. Clear yellow.
63'

Woodwork worshippers

Pauli have hit the woodwork eight times this season, the fifth-most in the Bundesliga. Two of those have come in this very clash.
62'

Saad shoots

Irvine slips a smart ball behind the Leipzig defence and Saad reaches it just outside the area. He lets it run onto his left foot and shoots but Seiwald slides in to block just in time. Out for a corner, which leads nowhere.
59'

Poor first impression

Dźwigała has only been on for a moment but he goes in the book for tripping Xavi.
56'

Powerhouse Pauli

It's rare that Pauli are outrun or outmuscled by an opponent and this game is no different. They're losing, but they're rarely fun to play against.

Half-time: RB Leipzig 2-0 St. Pauli

The home side have dominated possession and carved Pauli open time and again. Xavi and Šeško have teed one another up for two sensational goals. And yet Pauli have hit the woodwork twice. Fine margins. But when it's not your day...

Weißhaupt hits the bar!

For the second time this half, Pauli hit the woodwork. The ball is headed up into the air several times inside the Leipzig box before it drops to Weißhaupt. The forward opens up his body and smashes a volley against the crossbar. It pings back and hits Gulácsi, who gratefully turns and watches it bounce behind for a corner, and not into his net.

One minute added

The referee's assistant indicates just 60 seconds of added time.
45'

One-way traffic

The home side are totally dominant, pegging Pauli back into their own half and keeping the ball. Can the visitors keep the score to 2-0 before the break?
40'

Shooting chance missed

Nusa slips a smart ball between the defence to release Raum on the left. The German whips it, first-time, across the goalmouth and it's begging to be tapped in by Šeško. But the striker doesn't react quickly enough and watches it drift beyond him and away to nothing. Should have been 3-0.

Wasted overload

Leipzig break again from deep inside their own half. Xavi receives on the edge of his box and sends a stunning outside-of-the-boot pass down the left flank. Raum races onto it and into the Pauli third. The defender looks to whip a ball across the area but his attempt is overhit and is knocked behind by a defender for a corner.
16'

Clinical counter!

Pauli have their own shooting chance but Leipzig steal and race forward with intent. Xavi breaks down the left, into the opposition half, and spots a forward run from Šeško. The striker collects just inside the area and cuts inside a sliding defender before opening his body up and curling into the far-right corner. Ice cold.

Engine!

Stat alert: Only Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich has covered more ground this season than Pauli skipper Irvine. The Australian is due for another busy day at the office if the opening period is anything to go by.
14'

Pauli hit the woodwork!

The visitors almost score after a cross into the box from the left causes havoc. Castello tries to clear the bouncing ball but he gets into a muddle and shins one towards his own goal. Gulácsi is forced to dive to his left and pushes it onto his post and away to safety. Heart-in-the-mouth stuff for Pauli fans.

Irvine gets away with one

The Pauli skipper is wrong-footed by Xavi on the halfway line and chases back to upend the forward. The referee gives him a talking to but it could easily have been a yellow card.
7'

Dangerous play

Šeško collects the ball in the inside-right channel, not far from goal, and plays it wide to Baku, who slips a dangerous ball across the Pauli area. It's blocked behind for a corner. That then comes to nothing.
4'

So close!

Pauli almost get off to a dream start as an early Smith free kick, from the left-hand side, almost beats Gulácsi at his near post. The Hungarian parries the ball into his own area and a goalmouth scramble ensues. It's cleared off the line and booted away.

Rose has rung in five changes from the drab 0-0 draw with Union Berlin. Klostermann, Bitshiabu, Baumgartner, Seiwald amd Openda have been dropped to the bench for Nusa, Kampl, Haidara, Lukeba and Geertruida. Punishment for a poor performance or just time for fresh legs? Only he knows.

Marco Rose on facing Pauli

"It's going to be a tough task on Sunday against St. Pauli. With the fans behind us, we want to play with confidence in order to get things moving in the right direction again. It's tight in the table, so we have to get back into the mode of playing more football with greater confidence."

St. Pauli's signings

The Hamburg side bolstered their ranks during the window too, signing USMNT centre-back James Sands on loan from New York City FC, and winger Noah Weißhaupt on loan from Freiburg.

A first in the top flight?

St. Pauli's only win at RB Leipzig came under coach Ewald Lienen in August 2015 in the Bundesliga 2. The only goal of the game came courtesy of Lennart Thy.

Leipzig transfer business

Leipzig were very active in the winter transfer market in the hopes of getting their season back on track. Both Xavi and Vermeeren's loans from Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético Madrid respectively were made permanent. Additionally full-back Ridle Baku was acquired from Wolfsburg. In the other direction, striker André Silva was sent out on loan to Werder Bremen for the remainder on the season.

Records on the line

With St. Pauli being unbeaten in their last three Bundesliga outings, they have the opportunity to make it 4 Bundesliga games in a row without defeat, having not done so in 14 years. On the other hand, RB Leipzig have not won any of their last 4 Bundesliga games, and the Saxons have never gone 5 Bundesliga games in a row without a win!
