Full-time: Union 1-5 Bayern

The record Bundesliga champions make light work of lowly Union. A Thomas Müller double and further strikes from Harry Kane, Leon Goretzka and Mathys Tel mean Bayern leave the German capital with the points. For Union - in 14th - the threat of relegation lingers with four games to go.

Müller and out

On his 400th start in the Bundesliga, Thomas Müller has weighed in with a goalscoring double. The Bayern living legend is coming off for a breather, with Lovro Zvonarek on for the remainder.

Clean-sheet specialists?

Bayern are on course to make it three clean sheets in a row here. The Bavarians have recently managed to keep Cologne and Arsenal out, and it looks as if Union are set to be added to the list. The last time today's visitors achieved three in a row without conceding was three years ago under Hansi Flick.

Laïdouni Union's best

Laïdouni continues to menace for the hosts and the Tunisia international darts a pass across the face of goal, which none of his teammates can take advantage of.

Heaviest home loss

Union are in danger of suffering their biggest-ever home loss in the Bundesliga. The Irons have lost 5-0 twice away from home, against Borussia Dortmund in 2020 and Bayer Leverkusen in 2022.

Laïdouni finds Vertessen with a fine through pass. The Belgian sub goes for power and hits his shot too high to trouble Neuer.

Bayern win a free kick a good distance outside the area. Kane places it and has a look at goal. Bjelica recalls midfielder Lucas Tousart and forward Kevin Volland in the only two changes to the 2-0 defeat to Augsburg, with Rani Khedira and Jorbe Vertessen dropping to the bench. As for Bayern, Thomas Tuchel is without Leroy Sané, while Jamal Musiala is rested following the club's Champions League quarter-final win over Arsenal on Wednesday. Minjae Kim, Aleksandar Pavlović, Thomas Müller, Eric Choupo-Moting and Mathys Tel are rotated into the side. Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Raphaël Guerreiro and Konrad Laimer make way.

Not safe yet

Union begin the weekend three points clear of the bottom three. If Mainz and Bochum win, and they lose to Bayern, the Berlin outfit would drop into the relegation play-off spot.
camera-photo

History favours Bayern

Bayern are yet to lose in nine Bundesliga meetings with Union (W6, D3). They have only faced Darmstadt more often at this level without defeat (10 times).

Dethroned

This is Bayern's first outing since Leverkusen lifted the title, marking the end of a quite incredible reign as champions, which began on 6 April 2013. No team has ever won 11 successive Bundesliga titles. Will we ever witness such an incredible era of dominance again?

Tuchel's view on Union

"Union don't play with much possession. They sit deep and we'll have a lot of the ball. We seem to struggle more there than when we can counter. But we need to be better in dominant play. We chose a more pragmatic approach in recent top games where we delivered. Union won't play as dominant as Arsenal. But we'll still get chances in transition. We need to be hungry in winning back the ball. It'll be complex."
camera-photo

Bjelica's view on Bayern

“Three points are at stake in the match against Bayern, and that’s what we want. We have yet to achieve it so far, but there’s always a first time, and we’re fully focused and confident we can achieve it. Of course, Bayern had a hard match on Wednesday, and their focus will surely be on the Champions League semi-finals. They won’t be so focused on the Bundesliga because another team won the championship, and deservedly so. We want to exploit that, but we must perform at a top level, of course, turn in the best possible display, and if so, anything’s possible.”

Bayern ticking over

Bayern merely delayed the party at Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, Thomas Tuchel's side beating lowly Cologne the day before B04 won the top-flight title. The points gained by the Bavarians were nonetheless important to stay ahead of third-placed Stuttgart, albeit only on goal difference.

On thin ice

Union have seen their cushion over the relegation spots drop from nine down to three points in the last two games. In fact, the Irons have won only one of their previous seven while failing to score in five of those. Nenad Bjelica's side went down to Augsburg last weekend.
