Last week, the two sides started their respective Bundesliga campaigns in contrasting fashion - Bochum fell to a heavy 5-0 defeat away at Stuttgart, while Dortmund picked up all three points in a 1-0 victory over Cologne. However, Die Schwarzgelben needed 88 minutes to break the deadlock against Die Geißböcke, with Malen eventually grabbing the winner, having once again struggled to hit their stride early on here. Sebastien Haller did test Manuel Riemann between the hosts' sticks within the first 10 minutes but, for the rest of the opening period, the Bochum shot-stopper was relatively untroubled. His Dortmund counterpart Gregor Kobel, meanwhile, needed to be alert to deny Philipp Hofmann, but could do nothing as Stöger fired past him and into the bottom corner with a fierce effort shortly before the quarter-hour mark. Bochum could have doubled their advantage before the interval, too, but the woodwork denied Hofmann his first goal of 2023/24.

After the break, however, Dortmund displayed significantly more energy and, in the 56th minute, they were back on level terms. Malen was again the hero, shooting from just outside the penalty area and into the bottom corner. Although they had lost their advantage, Bochum remained dangerous and, were it not for Kobel, Stöger's deflected shot would have creeped into the top corner rather than out for a corner. Patrick Osterhage's effort came even closer to restoring his side's lead as the match approached its climax, but his effort struck the post. Ultimately, though, neither side was able to prevail, meaning they each had to make do with a share of the spoils. The visitors will now look forward to the visit of Heidenheim, who they play at home next week, while Bochum travel to Augsburg in search of their first win of the season.
