Sané thwarted!

Kane floats an inviting ball over the Cologne defence and suddenly Sané is one-on-one with Schwäbe. It's a tough one to take as the ball is bouncing, and Schwäbe reads Sané's intentions to lob him and paws it clear.

Hübers to the rescue!

Sané gets into space down the left and delivers a low cross into the middle. Kane is lurking unmarked, but Hübers just gets there at full stretch, deflecting the ball wide, with the help of the post.

Laimer scampers down the right, gets to the byline and crosses the ball into the middle. He finds Choupo-Moting, who turns his marker and angles a shot at goal that rolls just wide of the far post.

Hübers slips as he tries to pass the ball out from the back and for a brief moment it looks like Sané will have a chance to bear down on goal. The home defence recovers though, and the danger is cleared.

Target area: Cologne's right-hand side?

The Billy Goats have conceded more goals as a result of opposition attacks down their right-hand side (41 per cent) than via any other area of the pitch. Bayern's stats and video analysts are no doubt aware of this, which means Cologne right-back - likely to be Rasmus Carstensen - could be in for a busy night against Bayern wide men Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman.

It seems highly likely that Kane will have opportunities to add to his tally in this Matchday 12 opener given that Cologne have allowed opposing teams 179 shots at their goal already this season, at an average of 16 per game. Only Gladbach have a more concerning record in this regard (184 shots on their own goal).

Cologne have scored 56 per cent of their goals this season from dead-ball situations, with five of their nine strikes this term arriving from set pieces. That puts them ninth in the league overall; Bayern are top in this category though, with nine.

Kane coronation awaits!

He's already King Kane for Bayern fans, of course, but the Bundesliga's top marksman can become the sole owner of the tag of highest scoring Englishman in a single season in Germany's top flight if he scores against Cologne. Kane is level on 17 goals with Kevin Keegan and Jadon Sancho, who reached their tallies for Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

Reasons for Cologne to be optimistic? There are several, despite the Billy-Goats' tough start to the 2023/24 campaign. The home side are unbeaten in their last two and have picked up five points from their last four games. "We must play one of our best games to stand a chance," coach Baumgart said of tonight's encounter.

Big favourites

Ok, let's face it, visiting Bayern are the big favourites to win here and take provisional pole place in the Bundesliga standings. After all, the Bavarians have won on their last nine visits to Cologne and are 18 games unbeaten against the Billy Goats. However, as we all know, anything is possible in football.

"It's our second Friday match. Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies are only back from their travels today. It's a very, very unfortunate scheduling, particularly in a sporting sense, but it shouldn't be an excuse. I don't want to go on about it. We've opted for a short trip on Friday morning, so that the players can sleep at home. We want to win and we'll prepare to do that. It's another game, but I have happy memories [of the title win there]."

Baumgart's view on Bayern

"We don't need to talk about their quality. They have it in abundance. We need to force them into mistakes, not that they make many. We have to try to punish any they do make. It's unfortunate [Harry] Kane plays for the other team. We're going to have to play the best game of our lives to get something from it."
