BAYERN ARE SUPERCUP CHAMPIONS

What a sensational curtain raiser to the season that was ! Bayern were cruising, leading 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Musiala, Mane and Pavard. Halstenberg's header gave Leipzig hope, but Gnabry then restored the visitors' big lead. Nkunku netted from the spot before Olmo's near-post effort set up a grand-stand finish. Deep into injury time, Sane made sure Bayern won the Supercup with a breakaway goal.

NAGELSMANN WANTS BAYERN STATEMENT

Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann explained that tonight's opponents, Leipzig, "...are a young and hungry club that always try to chip away at Bayern's status." For that reason, the 35-year-old insisted that, "... it's important at Bayern that we make a statement," with their performance later.

DOMENICO TEDESCO SPEAKS

Leipzig's tactician said both he and his team are, "Really looking forward to Saturday's game against FC Bayern," as Die Roten Bullen go in search of what would be only a second competitive win against the Bundesliga champions. "This will be our first Supercup, we've trained a lot and trained well," the 36-year-old explained.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: BAYERN MUNICH

Bayern claimed a 10th successive Bundesliga title last season, with former Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann - like his old club - winning a major trophy for the first time in his career. Robert Lewandowski was the man that plundered the goals last season, but has since left the club. Today, we will get the first competitive look at how Mane can fill that gap.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: RB LEIPZIG

Leipzig lifted their first major trophy last season by defeating Freiburg 4-2 on penalties in a dramatic final. Nkunku was the star yet again, cancelling out Maximilian Eggestein’s effort in normal time to make it 1-1 with 14 minutes to play before successfully converting the first of Leipzig’s penalties. They were perfect with four from four, while Freiburg missed twice to ensure the trophy left with Domenico Tedesco’s side.

WHAT THEY'RE PLAYING FOR

This is the prize that the winning captain will collect later on this evening as Leipzig look to lift the Supercup for the first time and Bayern attempt to clinch glory for the 10th time in their history. They have also won each of the last two Supercups.

TODAY'S THE DAY

What a game we have in store later today, with last year's DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig host reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the traditional curtain-raiser for the new campaign. Will Christopher Nkunku pick up where he left-off last season and how will the likes of Sadio Mane and Matthijs de Ligt fare on their competitive debuts for Bayern? So many questions, so many answers to come when we kick-off at 8.30pm CEST. You don't want to miss this.

One man who’ll be looking to continue his sensational form from last season is Leipzig attacker Christopher Nkunku, who plundered 20 goals and 13 assists in the Bundesliga in 2021/22. Here’s what makes him so good.

TEDESCO FOCUSED

"We’ve got several weeks of training first,” Leipzig head coach Domenico Tedesco told the club website at the end of June as he led his team’s pre-season preparations on their first day back after a summer break. “I’m not focusing on the Supercup yet. Of course though, it’s a final, so we’ll be playing to win it. We’re obviously looking forward to it too.”

There have been five draws - the most recent of which was in December 2020 - while Die Roten Bullen have triumphed just once, doing so in March 2018 in a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Naby Keita and Timo Werner.

BAYERN BRING EXPERIENCE

The Bundesliga champions are no strangers to this competition, of course, and will be competing for the trophy for an 11th successive time. The Bavarian giants have won the Supercup six times since 2012. The last non-Bayern winner was Borussia Dortmund three years ago.

LEIPZIG'S FIRST SUPERCUP

Domenico Tedesco's side won their first ever DFB Cup following a penalty shootout win against Freiburg last May and are thus competing in their very first Supercup!

A VERY WARM WELCOME!

The Supercup between RB Leipzig and German champions Bayern Munich will take place on 30 July at 20:30 CET at the home of the DFB Cup holders.
