A mistake at the back from Union and Hoppe latches onto the loose ball. He plays it to the left of him and Boujellab who is in on goal but Karius touches his shot behind at his near post. It was a weak effort in the end from the substitute.
SCHALKE HAVE BEEN CONFIDENT
Union break forward and it's Prömel who crosses to the back post from the right. Ingvartsen beats Becker to the ball in the air and his point-blank header is on target, but Fährmann is there to make a crucial save.
The Union substitute is late in a challenge with Musatfi and takes a yellow card.
Kolasinac's cross teases Karius and he gets a hand to it to keep it out of his goal. Schalke keeping the pressure on in attack, but need to be wary of a Union counter as well.
HARIT JUST OVER
The Schalke No.25 takes the free-kick himself but curls it just over Karius' goal.
Harit is brought down on the edge of the Union area and Schalke have a free-kick in a dangerous spot here.
ANDRICH WIDE OF THE MARK
Union have now had 16 attempts go off target in this game as Andrich slices a shot high and wide from the edge of the Schalke area. It's just not been their night in front of goal.

UNION OFF FORM TONIGHT!
Awoniyi is in behind again but is caught up by Mustafi who forces him to give the ball up to Ingvartsen on the edge. His shot is a touch hot to handle for Fährmann who pushes it behind instead.
The Royal Blues are coming alive in this second half. Kolasican and Becker doing great work pushing up the pitch from full-back on either flank.
Fresh legs for Schalke with Boujellab on for Bentaleb and pace on the wing with Raman in place of William.
January signing Peter Musa comes on for Pohjanpalo, the loan signing from Slavia Prague.
HUGE CHANCE FOR AWONIYI!
Another massive chance for Union to go ahead and this time it's Awoniyi. A lovely flick from Pohjanpalo sends Awoniyi in on goal against Fährmann but he snatches at his shot, dragging the ball wide across goal. He screams out in frustration, and rightly so!
Gießelmann is racing down the left flank and curls in an outstanding cross beyond Mustafi. Pohjanpalo's run brings him to meet it in the area, but he fires the ball wide on the volley with his effort. A great move forward from Union, but again lacking that final touch.
Schalke were slow to get going in the first half and it's the same again here with a few mistakes on the ball and late challenges letting them down in the first 10 minutes of the second period.
There were plenty of chances in the first half but neither side was clinical in front of goal. That's what we're looking for at both ends in this second '45.
LOOKING FOR CLINICAL FINISHING
QUICK OUT OF THE BLOCKS
Ingvartsen has a shot blocked from just outside the Schalke area before Andrich fires a strike high over the bar on the slide with Union starting this second half quickly, as they did the first.
The second half is off and running with Schalke getting things back underway with no changes at the break.
We'll have two minutes of time added on at the end of this first half.
SERDAR HIGH AND WIDE
His second shot a lot further wide of goal than his first as he sends a volley high past Karius' goal. Schalke remaining confident right until the end of this first half.
SCHALKE CONFIDENT ON THE BALL
GENTNER HAS A GO!
Ingvartsen's free-kick is cleared to the edge of the Schalke box and Gentner meets it with a sweet volley. Fährmann is sprawling across his line to his left but the ball bounces just wide of the goal.
The first booking of the day for Schalke as William is cautioned for a foul on Hübner.

Union break in numbers behind the Schalke defence. Pohjanpalo's eventual shot is blocked by two different Schalke defenders, and the ball is cleared away. A rare opportunity for the home side in the last 15 minutes or so.

SERDAR JUST WIDE!
Schalke's first shot of the game is just inches away from opening the scoring. Harit lays the ball off to Serdar on the edge of the Union box and he takes a touch before lacing a shot goalward. It's heading for the far top corner but just drifts narrowly over the bar.
HOPPE CAUGHT IN TWO MINDS
Schalke break superbly with Kolasinac finding Bentaleb who then sent Hoppe away down the left. He cuts inside past one challenge but doesn't know whether to shoot or pass as space opens up. In the end, his effort on goal is blocked back to Karius.
KNOCK FOR HARIT
The Moroccan takes a knock to the head in a challenge from Andrich and he's having some treatment now.
Schalke have dominated possession in the last 10 minutes or so, but they've been able to create any attempts on goal thus far.
CHANCES AT ONE END
Only Leipzig, Wolfsburg and Leverkusen have conceded fewer goals than Union this season, and the home side look defensively sound once again today. Pressing across the pitch, they're giving Schalke's players no room to breathe on the ball.
SEEING PLENTY OF THE BALL
Schalke are looking confident on the ball in these early stages, and we've seen them start games well in possession this season on plenty of occasions. Will they be able to make it count, though, that is the question.
BENTALEB BACK IN ACTION

The Frenchman is the deepest midfielder for Schalke, with Serdar and Bentaleb pushed up ahead of him. Harit is looking to get involved early from the left, drifting inside plenty.
Union starting well here and it's Pohjanpalo and then Gießelmann on the follow up who both see shots blocked by the Schalke defence. The away side with defending to do here in the opening phases.
Awoniyi is in behind the Schalke defence early on after Trimmel's pass inside is flicked through by Pohjanpalo. Awoniyi awkwardly shoots at goal though and Fährmann is able to make a good save.
An early card for the Union captain as he brings down Bentaleb early on.
HERE WE GO!
The ball is rolling in Berlin for our Saturday evening treat with Union hosting Schalke.
NOW OR NEVER FOR SCHALKE
Things are getting ever more desperate for Schalke, despite Hoppe's form. Their 3-0 loss at home to Leipzig last Saturday, combined with Mainz’s win over Union and point against Leverkusen this afternoon, leaves them six points adrift at the bottom - and nine to the relative safety of the play-off.
HOPE LIES WITH HOPPE?
Hoppe is Schalke’s top scorer this season with five goals, although he has not found the net in his last three outings. The American teen spoke to bundesliga.com this week about his dreams coming true with Schalke, and wanting to help the side stay up this season. You can read all about it on the website and in the app.

NO FUN AWAY FROM HOME

UNION'S KEYS TO SUCCESS
