Full-blooded tackles were the name of the game early on with both teams intent on establishing the upper hand. The terrier-like qualities of Sebastian Rode and Stefan Ilsanker in central midfield helped the visitors succeed in this regard and, despite having creator-in-chief Filip Kostic substituted off with an injury after a quarter of an hour, they edged in front 30 minutes in when Silva converted emphatically from the penalty spot after being tripped by Dedryck Boyata. Kevin Trapp had to be alert to keep out a brilliant shot on the swivel by Hertha forward Dodi Lukebakio shortly afterwards, but Frankfurt went into half-time two goals to the good when Bas Dost headed in Daichi Kamada’s laser-guided delivery from a free-kick.

Hertha coach Bruno Labbadia made three changes at the interval in a bid to breathe new life into his side’s attacking play, and it appeared to be working as Lucas Tousart tested Trapp from range, before Lukebakio glanced a header narrowly wide of the target from a Matheus Cunha free-kick. Trapp had to be alert to deny Jhon Cordoba too, but just as it looked like the home team would score, the Eagles effectively killed the game off when Rode curled in a brilliant goal from the edge of the area. Hertha refused to give in though, but a late own goal from Martin Hinteregger following a driving run by Jordan Torunarigha was all they could muster, as Frankfurt returned home with all three points.
