Bundesliga 2, Matchday 6 overview: High-flying Hertha Berlin stay perfect!

Hertha Berlin continued their perfect start to the Bundesliga 2 season by winning at struggling Dynamo Dresden, while fellow high-flyers Nuremberg secured three points in Karlsruhe. However, Heidenheim lost pace with the top two after a draw at Arminia Bielefeld.

Matchday 6 results

Wolfsburg 5-1 Darmstadt
Goals: 1-0 Bernhardsson 14’, 1-1 Smit 29’, 2-1 Glatzel 40’, 3-1 Bernhardsson 61’, 4-1 Damar 67’, 5-1 Glatzel 79’

Wolfsburg returned to winning ways with a crushing victory over lowly Darmstadt. Alexander Bernhardsson gave the Wolves a deserved lead, only for Milan Smit to capitalise on a defensive error and bring Darmstadt level against the run of play. Robert Glatzel restored the hosts’ lead late in the first half, and Wolfsburg ran riot after the break. Bernhardsson volleyed home to complete his brace, Muhammed Damar added a fourth and Glatzel capped the rout with his second of the game.

Greuther Fürth 1-1 Magdeburg
Goals: 0-1 Iyoha 5', 1-1 Sillah 20'

The visitors got off to a flying start when Emmanuel Iyoha slammed home from close range after five minutes. However, they couldn’t maintain their positive start for long. Fürth grew into the game and found their response after 20 minutes through Omar Sillah. Both sides brought the same level of intensity into the second 45, but this time neither could find the back of the net. Both goalkeepers were tested, with Sillah and Shinta Appelkamp going close for the hosts, and Iyoha and Richmond Tachie for Magdeburg, but the scores remained level.

Karlsruhe 0-1 Nuremberg
Goals: 0-1 Zoma 30’

Mohamed Alì Zoma celebrated his recent Italy call-up with the game’s only goal as Nuremberg edged past Karlsruhe to continue their fine start to the season. The visitors broke the deadlock when Javi Fernández split the home defence with a perfectly weighted pass into Zoma, who finished calmly over advancing goalkeeper Hans Christian Bernat for his sixth goal of the campaign. Rafael Pinto Pedrosa had a venomous strike disallowed for offside in the second half as the hosts pushed for an equaliser, but Nuremberg held on.

Kaiserslautern 1-0 Eintracht Braunschweig
Goals: 1-0 Yardımcı 73‘

Kaiserslautern and Eintracht Braunschweig were eager to get back to winning ways but that didn’t result in a contest packed with goalmouth action. The intensity was there from both sides throughout but clear-cut chances were at a premium, with Braunschweig also having to make three injury related substitutions. A double change from the hosts in the second-half changed the game, with Erencan Yardımcı’s lobbed finish converting a lightning-quick counter shortly after his introduction. Thierry Tazemeta and Semih Şahin then went close soon after, with Lautern dominating the latter stages of the half.

Holstein Kiel 1-1 Osnabrück
Goals: Harres 45‘+2 (pen.), 1-1 Sekine 72‘ (og.)
Red card: Zec 75‘

Holstein Kiel are still without a win this season after six games as they let a lead slip to promoted Osnabrück. After an initial period that saw more yellow cards than chances, things began to open up and Holstein went ahead on the stroke of half-time through Phil Harres’ penalty. However, the visitors levelled when Jonathan Gómez’s cross took a big deflection off Hiroki Sekine. Kiel’s David Zec was sent off for a second yellow with 15 minutes remaining, although the point takes them off the foot of the table.

Dynamo Dresden 1-2 Hertha Berlin
Goals: 1-0 Čović 10’, 1-1 Thorsteinsson 29’, 1-2 Thorsteinsson 80’

Dynamo Dresden were dominant early on and took the lead when Patrice Čović glided through the Hertha half and struck a deflected shot past Marius Gersbeck. Struggling to gain a foothold, Hertha equalised through a clever finish from Jón Dagur Thorsteinsson, but were still unable to truly stamp their authority on the half. In the second period, both teams squandered viable chances, but it was the Icelandic winger who proved decisive, slamming home his second goal from distance to maintain the Berliners’ 100 percent record.

Hannover 2-1 Bochum
Goals: 1-0 Thórdarson 24’, 2-0 Hartel 43’, 2-1 Meyer 77’

Hannover bounced back from their Matchday 5 defeat to Nuremberg that cost Christian Titz his job by beating Bochum 2-1 on home soil. Stefán Teitur Thórdarson broke the deadlock from close range after 24 minutes, before Marcel Hartel doubled the hosts’ advantage shortly before half-time following good work from Kolja Oudenne. Tom Meyer pulled one back in the 77th minute, but Hannover held on to secure all three points before Sandro Wagner takes the helm.

Arminia Bielefeld 2-2 Heidenheim
Goals: 1-0 Grodowski 13’, 1-1 Zivzivadze 30’ (pen), 1-2 Hennrich 45’+3, 2-2 Hagmann 55’

Arminia Bielefeld recovered from a half-time deficit to earn a 2-2 draw with Heidenheim. Joel Grodowski put the hosts ahead after 13 minutes with his fifth league goal of the season, before Budu Zivzivadze’s penalty and Paul Hennrich’s stoppage-time strike turned the game around. Felix Hagmann restored parity 10 minutes after the restart to secure a share of the spoils for Bielefeld.

Energie Cottbus 1-1 St. Pauli
Goals: 1-0 Butler 37’, 1-1 Kaars 80’
Red card: Andō 21’

St. Pauli battled back from a man and a goal down to snatch a point away at Energie Cottbus. The visitors had started well, with Abdoulie Ceesay finding the net but from an offside position. The game changed midway through the first half when Tomoya Andō was shown two yellow cards in quick succession. Cottbus finally made their numerical advantage count just before the break when Justin Butler fired in his third goal of the season. However, Die Kiezkicker denied Energie back-to-back wins and clean sheets when substitute Martijn Kaars headed home Ricky-Jade Jones’ cross from close range, keeping their side only a point behind their opponents.
