The last time the two clubs met in Bundesliga 2 was in the 1992/93 season. Wolfsburg won 3-0 at home, with Siegfried Reich scoring twice and Holger Ballwanz once, while Darmstadt won the return fixture 4-0 at the Bölle.

Former coach

Kohfeldt was Wolfsburg head coach from October 2021 to May 2022. After three competitive wins to start his tenure, results became more difficult, and the club parted ways with him after they finished 12th in the Bundesliga.
