Marius Bülter's late winner at Mainz last weekend means Cologne have already collected as many away victories - one - as they did in their ill-fated 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign. Can they build on that fine start tonight?

Grifo ends Freiburg's spot-kick struggles

Vincenzo Grifo became the first Freiburg player to score from the penalty spot since February 2024 in last weekend's defeat at home to Augsburg. Remarkably, Julian Schuster's side had failed to convert their previous six spot-kicks, with Grifo missing three of those. If the visitors win a penalty this evening, the Italian may be a little more confident of finding the back of the net.

Both sides at full strength

Both coaches are expected to be able to choose from a full complement of players this evening. Ragnar Ache, Florian Kainz and Linton Maina are available for the Billy Goats, while Patrick Osterhage, Igor Matanović, Philipp Treu and Niklas Beste are fit again for the visitors.

Waldschmidt out to haunt the Breisgau club

The former Freiburg striker will hope he can have a similar impact against his old side as he did against Mainz, after assisting Marius Bülter's winning header on Matchday 1. He made 56 appearances for Freiburg between 2018 and 2020. In his six games against his former club, he has won twice, drawn one and lost three, scoring once.

If you were to Google "against the run of play" then Freiburg's game against Augsburg would come out. There were obviously a few mistakes but they weren't as bad a people make out. We're looking forward to the game but we want to fans to go home happy as well - we have to deliver for those in the stadium."
