Full time: Gladbach 0-1 Leipzig

Leipzig made it five straight wins in all competitions with a hard-fought victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Timo Werner's first goal of the season settling an even contest. With chances at a premium, Xavi Simons popped up in the final quarter with his fourth assist of the campaign to find Werner, who finished from the tightest of angles to send Leipzig into the top three. The Foals, meanwhile, remain winless in the Bundesliga this term.

Frustrated Foals

Hack heads onto the roof of the net as the Foals look to fight their way back into this one. Is Gladbach's search for a first win of this Bundesliga season about to stretch into another week? It looks like it at this point.

Werner lively

Werner races away but his early shot is easily gathered by Nicolas.

Werner first

Timo Werner scored eight of his nine Bundesliga goals at home last season. His first of the current campaign is scored away from the Red Bull Arena.

Leipzig lead!

And there is the moment of inspiration. This is such a tidy goal. Gladbach give up possession in the middle of the park. The ball works its way to Xavi, who threads a sumptuous pass through for Werner. The Leizpig sub rounds Nicolas but the angle looks a little tight. Not so. Werner finds a way to goal with a shot that pings off the inside of the far post and crosses the line.

No way through

Werner looks to Turbo down the left but the Germany international's final ball leaves plenty to be desired. We'll need a moment of high inspiration to break the deadlock here.

Lepizig subs

Marco Rose rings the changes. Timo Werner, Yussuf Poulsen and Christoph Baumgartner are on for the visitors.

Double swap

Ngoumou and Pléa are sent into the mix by Gerardo Seoane. Forwards Honorat and Jordan have been taken off.

Better from Foals

Lovely stuff from the hosts who battle back to win possession via Koné. Honorat sits one up from the left and Reitz is there with a header that's goal bound. Blaswich dives back and gets a fingertip to the ball to send it over the top. The home fans liked that.

Chances at a premium

Just the one shot on target in this game so far. Subs from both sides have begun to warm up. This Matchday 5 encounter needs an injection of something. Perhaps a switch or two will do the trick.

Almost Šeško

Schalger's deep cross to the far post just evades Šeško's head and the hosts get away with one there.

Foals edging possession

This game has been tight in terms of action in the final third. Gladbach are seeing most of the ball but can't quite turn their possession into chances.

Carvalho goes close

Just when it seemed Fábio Carvalho was drifting out of this game, the 21-year-old pulls out a wonderful, curling shot towards the far corner from the edge of the area. Moritz Nicolas makes one of those diving saves that look great in a photograph. The game's best moment thus far.

Leipzig rising

Plenty of possession from Die Roten Bullen now with Henrichs and Raum doing their best to supply the ammunition for Leipzig's forwards. Still no breakthrough here, however.

Goal disallowed

Henrichs pulls the ball back from the endline, Raum smacks it into the centre and Openda deflects into the back of the net. The assistant on the far side says that the ball was out before Henrichs played his pass.

Starting interest

Benjamin Šeško has two Bundesliga goals from three substitute appearances thus far for Leipzig. It will be interesting to see what the Slovenia international can muster in his first start for the visitors today. There will be plenty of eyes on Liverpool loanee Fábio Carvalho too, with the attacker racking up just 32 top-flight minutes to date.

Youth prevails

Both today's starting XIs have an average age of 24.8 years old.

Gladbach are currently down in 14th with two points from their first four matches. Their coach says: "Of course we're not happy with two points. The first half in particular in Darmstadt wasn't good. However, I feel a hunger in the team to keep going on the path we've been on after the summer rebuild."

Close call on Čvančara

Gladbach coach Gerardo Seoane confirms that Tomáš Čvančara [pictured], who is the club's leading scorer with three goals in four Bundesliga matches, is a doubt. Benjamin Šeško continues to bang at the door, after scoring from the bench against Young Boys. However, Marco Rose has been waxing lyrical about what veteran striker Yussuf Poulsen brings to the team of late, so may wait until next week's rearranged DFB Cup first-round meeting with Wehen Wiesbaden to rotate.
