Reis was clearly impressed by his side's performance against Eintracht Frankfurt despite the 3-0 defeat, with Michael Frey the only new face in the starting line-up - this will be the Swiss striker's first start for 'Die Konigsblauen' following his loan move from Royal Antwerp in Belgium. Simon Terrode is the man to miss out as a result.

The big news from the Leipzig camp is Timo Werner's inclusion in the starting line-up, in place of Emil Forsberg, for the first time since October. The Germany international is the club's top goalscorer this season behind the injured Christopher Nkunku, and his availability is an undoubted plus. Benjamin Henrichs, who replaces Mohamed Simakan, is the only other change from the Bayern game.

Despite the contrasting form of the two sides, Leipzig manager Marco Rose is not getting ahead of himself. During his pre-match press conference, he said, "Schalke played really well in Frankfurt. It will be a tough game. They play with real intensity and fight extremely hard. They will really test us."

Reis appears to have pinpointed his side's problem - a lack of goals. "We can’t allow ourselves to get too nervous in front of goal. We keep working on our shooting in training," he said. "We simply have to break our duck. I believe that we can score twice or three times if we just get the first one."

Leipzig have prevailed in six of the last ten meetings between the two sides (L2, D2). The last match-up between the two came in February 2021, when Julian Nagelsmann was still in charge at the Red Bull Arena - you can watch the highlights right here!

Schalke struggling

It is a rather different story in Gelsenkirchen, however. A run of six straight defeats led to manager Frank Kramer's dismissal in October, while new boss Thomas Reis has lost four of his first five fixtures. That quintet of matches did include a 1-0 victory over Mainz, though, from which Reis will surely try to draw inspiration ahead of a tough task tonight.

The winter break arguably came at the wrong time for Leipzig, who won 11 of their 13 matches prior to the FIFA World Cup, drawing the other two. They returned to Bundesliga action last Friday with a respectable 1-1 draw at home to Bayern, meaning 'Die Rotenbullen' come into this clash on the back of a 14-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
