Schalke are lucky that Kiel don't extend their lead. Brilliant combination on the right wing involving Bernhardsson and Knudsen. In the end, Knudsen squares it across the penalty area to Tolkin, who shoots over the empty net from just a few metres out. To make matters worse, the American then collides with the post and requires brief treatment. Luckily for Tolkin, the offside flag did go up.

Becker and the Storks
Timo Becker featured for Schalke in their last victory over Kiel, and has since returned to the Royal Blues this summer after three years with Kiel. For the Storks, Becker made 30 Bundesliga and 52 second division appearances, scoring 10 goals.
One for the history books?
Schalke last won against Kiel in August 2021 (3-0 away), however; the only Schalke home victory against the Storks was 84 years ago. In October 1941, the Ruhr outfit achieved a 6-0 thrashing of Kiel in the DFB Cup, with Ernst Kuzorra scoring that day.
The 2023/24 encounters
In the last season in which both sides were in the same division (Bundesliga 2) - in 2023/24 - Kiel won both matches against the Royal Blues without conceding. The 1-0 home victory was won thanks to a goal from former Schalke player Steven Skrzybski, while in Gelsenkirchen the Storks won 2-0 with a man advantage, after a red card was shown to Ron Schallenberg in the 39th minute.
Good record under Rapp
Since Marcel Rapp became the manager at Kiel, the Storks have collected seven points in three matches against Schalke and conceded only one goal.
