The Royal Blues held their nerve in added time to claim a narrow win.

Schalke claim a hard-fought victory thanks to Karaman's late penalty - a win they just about deserve based on the balance of play. Dresden started brightly and forced Karius into several fine saves, but the home side faded after the interval.

That cup shock 11 years ago against a Schalke team including Boateng, Choupo-Moting, Draxler and Huntelaar was also Dresden's last victory in this fixture. They lost both matches in Bundesliga 2 in 2021/22 (2-1 and 3-0).

That victory was an exception, as Dynamo have won all other five home matches against the Royal Blues, once even as a third division team in the DFB Cup against a Schalke side competing in the Champions League (2-1 on 18 August 2014).
