Stark makes an important clearance as Union throw bodies forward in search of the leveller. That's surely it...

Denied!

Rönnow's out quickly to narrow the angle and prevent Topp from scoring a late second goal following a lightning counter. Two of the seven added minutes still to go...

Defensive reinforcements

Malatini replaces Sugawara, who is moving a touch gingerly after overstretching for a ball. Stark's also on for goalscorer Grüll as Steffen tries to shut up shop.

So Grüll on Union

Bremen get the breakthrough in spectacular style. Sugawara launches a low ball into the feet of Grüll, who still has it all to do on the corner of the Union box. He cuts inside, before arrowing a superb effort into the far corner. No chance for Rönnow!

Nothing doing

Grüll goes into the book for hauling down Burke. The ball's sent into the danger from the resultant free-kick, but Backhaus is able to claim.

The effort's there, but there's not been enough creativity in the final third. Not great for the strikers...

Moment's applause

All inside the stadium pay their respects to former Werder player Max Lorenz, who has died at the age of 86. Lorenz made over 250 appearances for the Green-Whites, helping them win their first Bundesliga title in 1964/65.

Don't Stop Me Now

The Queen anthem is blaring out at the Weser, with the home crowd singing along to create a wonderful atmosphere. And here come the two sets of players...

Tight in the middle

Bremen can climb above Union and into the top half of the table, overnight at least, with a win.

Familiar faces

Derrick Köhn and Oliver Burke are two former Bremen players in the Union starting XI today. Köhn produced a brace of assists when the clubs last met in Bremen - a 4-1 win for Werder, in which Burke featured as a substitute for the hosts.

The Bonifac-tor

Boniface has one assist to show for his first five substitute appearances of the campaign. The Nigerian registered 14 goals and nine assists in his first season at parent club Leverkusen, but fell out of favour last term, finishing 2024/25 with 10 goal involvements across 19 league games.

More on those teams

Leverkusen loanee Victor Boniface makes his first start of the season, with Cameron Puertas making way. Patrice Čović also drops out for the returning Senne Lynen in the Bremen midfield. As for Union, Oliver Burke returns in attack at the expense of Tom Skarke.

Trouble on Fridays

It is fair to say the Werderaner have not enjoyed Friday fixtures recently. They have lost the last three such matches, and by a margin of at least three goals on each occasion. This is a chance for them to turn things around.
camera-photo

Horst Steffen on facing Union Berlin

"It should be clear that we'll face a similar opponent to last week, but one whose quality is superior to Heidenheim. Union will demand a lot from us. It's very clear how they want to play. They rely heavily on long balls and then go for the second ball. But they also occasionally play through the six. They also rely on early crosses."
camera-photo

Steffen Baumgart on facing Werder Bremen

"In regards to Bremen, it's tough to talk about a style. But they have a clear plan, are a good team, and haven't changed much since the summer. It'll be an exciting game for us, but we are clearly looking forward to it.

Two teams that see less of the ball

Friday's meeting involves two of the teams with the lowest average possession stats in the Bundesliga so far this season. Bremen have averaged 47% possession in their seven games to date, whereas Union sit comfortably bottom of the possession charts with an average possession stat of just 36%.

Previous meetings

Since Union Berlin's promotion to the top flight ahead of the 2019/20 season, the two sides have met ten times. Of those ten games, Union have won six, whereas Bremen have won just three. Bremen have, however, only lost one of the last four meetings between the sides.

Stark back in action

Some positive news has emerged for Werder this week with Niklas Stark returning to training following just over a month out with a hip injury. The 30-year-old centre-back was a mainstay at the heart of Bremen's defence last season and started the first three games of this campaign across all competitions.

Previous meeting: Union 2-2 Werder

Last time out: Heidenheim 2-2 Bremen

Bremen, meanwhile, were denied what would have been a third league win of the season by second-bottom Heidenheim. The Green-Whites are two points behind Union and four clear of the relegation zone.

Last time out: Union 3-1 Gladbach

Union picked up all three points at home against Gladbach last time out. The capital club sit ninth, with 10 points from a possible 21.
