Watch: Serhou Guirassy: "I want to be the best player in Germany"

camera-photo

Full-time: Dortmund 3-0 Union

After surviving an early onslaught in the second half from Union, Dortmund claim what proved to be a comfortable victory in the end. Guirassy added a second midway through the second half with a delightful chipped effort, before Nmecha wrapped things up with a venomous volley in the game's closing stages.

Querfeld goes for the spectacular

The centre-back tries a shot from a free-kick from 40 yards out. He showed last season against Stuttgart that he can score from this range, however today, his shot sails well over the crossbar.

Final changes

BVB make their final substitutions of the match, bringing on Adeyemi and Groß for Guirassy the goalscorer, and Sabitzer.
85'

In from Kemlein

The substitute floats a great ball to the back post from a free-kick by the left touchline, but Dortmund are first to it and head it clear comprehensively.
camera-photo

Nmecha puts it beyond all doubt!

Svensson's corner isn't cleared properly by Union; only reaching the edge of the box. Nmecha is quickest to react, running onto the ball before putting his foot through it and smashing it home first-time into the bottom right corner. A great strike to seal the three points for Dortmund here.

Sabitzer forces the corner

A ball from Nmecha finds the Austrian at the far post. Sabitzer tries to steer it goalwards, but his effort is blocked behind for a corner.

Double BVB substitution

Kovač opts to make more changes, replacing Anselmino and Beier. Both players are met with an incredible reception from the home fans, with the former having delivered a really solid defensive performance on his debut, and the latter getting the assist for Guirassy's second. They are replaced by Ryerson and the recently-returned Chukwuemeka.

Superb last-ditch defending

Union substitute Burke is sent in behind the BVB backline, or would be, if not for a fantastically-timed sliding challenge from Anselmino. He was the last man then, so had to get it right - and did!

More changes

Both managers go to the bench this time. Nmecha replaces Bellingham and both summer arrivals Köhn and Burke replace Skov and Ansah.

Bensebaini lets fly

The centre-back gets high up the pitch and picks up a loose ball from Brandt inside the Union box. His low, left-footed effort is met by a good save from Rønnow down to his left.

Double change

Baumgart is the first of the managers to go to the bench as he chases the two-goal deficit. Jeong and Skarke replace Král and Trimmel.

Guirassy doubles BVB's advantage!

Just like that, Dortmund are 2-0 up. Guirassy finds Beier with a ridiculous backheeled flick and carries on his run. Beier returns the favour, picking him out inside the box and Guirassy simply lifts the ball over the Union keeper to get his second of the afternoon.

Anselmino shows his defensive quality

57'

On target

Guirassy picks the ball up from deep and drives at the Union goal. He lets fly from outside the box, and it's well-struck, but Rønnow makes a comfortable save.
56'

Miscommunication

Sabitzer drives his side up the pitch really well before laying it off to Couto. Couto's first touch is a tad heavy and neither player is sure who should cross it, causing Sabitzer to cross the ball into his teammate.
53'

Union knocking on the door

It's been one-way traffic in the initial stages of the second half here; Dortmund have been limited to playing on the counter. However, die Eisernen have not yet been able to convert their dominance into goals.
48'

Strong start

Union have started the second half very brightly and win themselves another corner. Ilić wins the initial header, flicking it to Rothe at the far post, but the defender can't get his shot off.
47'

Early corner

A venomous Trimmel cross towards the back post sees Union rewarded with an early corner. The captain takes again, finding Ilić at the penalty spot. The striker had rose high and his header is a good one, but it's straight at Kobel, who parries it away.

Back underway!

Union get the ball rolling for the second half here. Both sides are unchanged.

Half-time: Dortmund 1-0 Union

So, it's the hosts who lead at the break. It was a tentative start from both sides, with the head injury to Bellingham and Ilić breaking up the momentum in the early stages. Both Ilić and Guirassy each had golden opportunities to give their sides the lead, pouncing on defensive errors, but squandered both chances. However, Guirassy's close-ranged finish from a Couto cross was enough to give Dortmund the lead shortly before the break.

Guirassy breaks the deadlock!

On the stroke of half-time, it's BVB who lead, but it was all about the assist from Couto. The right wing-back shows some excellent footwork to beat his man on the wing before cutting onto his supposedly weaker left foot to whip a cross in. Guirassy gets ahead of his marker and pokes home from six yards out - a clinical strikers' goal.

Golden chance for Ilić!

A long ball over the top for Union catches Anselmino out, who tries to head back to Kobel under pressure from Ilić. He doesn't get enough on it, however, and Ilić has himself a one-on-one with Kobel, but his effort is wide of the mark.
41'

Another Trimmel cross

The captain takes yet another free-kick from near the right touchline, but, as has been the story of the half so far, the defence come out on top and BVB head it clear.
40'

Well worked

Bellingham orchestrates a great BVB move. Initially playing a one-two with Couto, he sends Brandt between the lines to the byline, from where Dortmund's captain digs out a cross back to Guirassy. However, Rothe does well to come across and get a block in before the No.9 can pull the trigger.
37'

Quickfire corners

Couto takes a quick corner from the left finding Guirassy in the middle, whose effort is on target but deflected behind for another corner. Couto takes again, but this time Haberer clears emphatically for Die Eisernen.
36'

Too much on it

Dortmund enjoy a spell of prolonged possession in Union's half. Brandt does well to rescue the ball from going out for a throw-in. He plays it back to Bensebaini, who feeds Beier. The striker then tries to flick it on for Svensson, but puts too much on it and it goes behind for a goal-kick.
34'

Trimmel takes the free-kick

The captain takes the set-piece from near the right touchline. He finds Ansah, who peels off the backline before playing it back to Querfeld, whose effort from the edge of the box is deflected behind for a corner. Union can't capitalise on the subsequent corner, though.

Huge let off for Union

A Rothe pass back to Rønnow is undercooked. Guirassy reads it and pounces before bearing down on the Union keeper for a one-on-one. However, his finish is too central and ends up straight in the arms of Rønnow. That was a huge chance for Dortmund's No.9 to give them the lead...
camera-photo

Physical encounter

Both sides are giving it everything in the challenges, but neither team has managed to fashion any clear-cut chances as of yet. The stoppage for the head injuries somewhat prevented the game from getting into its swing.
21'

Play resumes

After treatment, both players are deemed fit to continue, though they've had to don headbands. We're back underway here.
18'

Clash of heads

There's a stoppage as Bellingham and Ilić receive treatment having collided heads in the air when going up for a header.
17'

Guirassy goes it alone

The No.9 combines well down the right, playing a one-two with Couto to be sent through to the byline. Beier and Svensson are available for a cut-back, but the Guinean opts to go for goal, trying to smash it in high at the near post. However, he's leaning back too far and blazes it over the bar.
15'

Couto fouled

Dortmund's wing-back is brought down by the right touchline, not far from the Union box. Svensson takes it, floating a cross towards the far post where Guirassy is waiting, but Rønnow does well to punch it clear among a sea of bodies.
camera-photo

Electric atmosphere in Signal Iduna Park

The Yellow Wall were out in full force with tifos and choreography ahead of their side's first home game of this Bundesliga season.
9'

Overplayed

Union combine well on the edge of the BVB box. First Král finds himself in a position to shoot but tees up Ansah instead, who also wants to shoot but can't get the ball out of his feet. He wins a corner, however, Union don't manage to make anything of it.
6'

Union showing their hand

Doekhi goes long to Ilić, who controls the ball down to Ansah as Union get themselves up the pitch. The forward then lays it back to Trimmel, whose effort from range is well off target.
4'

In by Trimmel

Union's captain swings in a great cross from the right touchline looking for Ilić in the middle. It's slightly overcooked and, whilst Ilić gets his head to it, the forward is underneath the ball and heads it harmlessly over the bar.

Debut for the new boy Anselmino

Dortmund team news

By contrast, Niko Kovač makes three changes to his BVB side that drew 3-3 away at St. Pauli on their season opener. New boy Anselmino gets the nod to make his full Bundesliga debut at the back, replacing Filippo Mané, who serves a suspension for a red card he acquired against Pauli. Brandt and Beier also come in for Groß and Adeyemi, who start on the bench.

More on that Union team

For Steffen Baumgart, there's just the one change to his side that beat Stuttgart 2-1 on the opening day. Král starts in place of Schäfer, who drops to the bench.

Hummels honoured with star on walk of fame

After having the opportunity to bid farewell to the Dortmund fans on 10 August in BVB's final friendly fixture of pre-season (against Juventus), Mats Hummels, who had announced his retirement from football, has now been immortalised with a star on Dortmund's 'Walk of Fame' around Signal Iduna Park. Fans of the Black & Yellows may well be on the lookout for the World Cup-winning defender's placard ahead of kick-off this afternoon...

Ansah to strike again?

Union's new arrival from Paderborn, Ilyas Ansah, was on fire on Matchday 1 as Stuttgart fell to his brace at the Alte Försterei. Steffen Baumgart will no doubt be hoping for more of the same from his forward in a tough away fixture at Signal Iduna Park.

Home ambitions

Sunday's fixture is BVB's first home game of 2025/26, and they'll be desperate to get off to a strong start. They were second in the home form table last season, with just three losses at Signal Iduna Park last season in the league, winning 11 and drawing the remaining three out of 17.
camera-photo

Steffen Baumgart on facing Dortmund

"It was very clear to see, despite them conceding three goals [against St. Pauli], how much this Dortmund team has developed. They're very good on the ball and clearly very good going forward with a lot of big players. We'll need to give 100 percent in order to be successful."
camera-photo

Niko Kovač on facing Union Berlin

"It'll be a different game to that one [the 6-0 win last season]. Then, they played with a four at the back, now they're using a five, or three, at the back with two very robust strikers, so it will be a very different game. They started their season with a win while we began with a draw, so of course we want to win our first home game but it'll be difficult, like every Bundesliga game."
camera-photo

Defensive cover

Dortmund had their next new man through the door on Wednesday with the arrival of Aarón Anselmino on loan from Chelsea. The Argentine defender will spend the season at Signal Iduna Park, offering options at the back amidst an injury crisis.
camera-photo

Carney returns

BVB confirmed their third major signing of the summer on Tuesday afternoon with the news that Carney Chukwuemeka, who spent the second half of last season on loan from Chelsea, had now returned on a permanent five-year deal. "I'm just happy that Borussia Dortmund is now my new footballing home. I will give everything I can to ensure that we achieve our goals as a team," the midfielder said.
camera-photo

Kovač commits

There's been a flurry of contract activity at Dortmund this week, starting on Tuesday with a new deal for coach Niko Kovač through to 2027. "With honest work, clear decisions and great enthusiasm, we want to help Borussia regain its former strength. We still have a lot to achieve together here," the Berlin-born former Croatia international said.
camera-photo

Home comforts to get rolling

This is the first time in 11 years that Dortmund have failed to win their opening Bundesliga match of a season. They last slipped up in their first two games in 2007/08. However, they've won their last four Bundesliga fixtures at the Signal Iduna Park, scoring at least three goals in each.

The Serhou Show

Always a winner, but only one in Dortmund

Of the 12 Bundesliga meetings between these sides, there has yet to be a draw. Borussia have eight wins to Union's four, but all six games played in Dortmund have been BVB victories. There is no other team the Black-Yellows have hosted so often in the Bundesliga without ever dropping a point.
