How Batz frustrated Bayern

A closer look at the weekend heroics of goalkeeper Daniel Batz, as Mainz went within moments of inflicting a first Bundesliga defeat of the season on Bayern Munich.

... at least up until this weekend. The 05ers have won all four of the teams' previous Bundesliga meetings and count the Kiezkickers as they only side they boast a 100 percent win rate against their top-flight history.

Upturn in fortunes

That aforementioned win for St. Pauli against Heidenheim helped the Hamburg-based side to end a run of 10 winless Bundesliga matches (which included nine defeats). Counting a 2-1 DFB Cup victory in Mönchengladbach and a 1-1 Bundesliga draw in Cologne, Alexander Blessin's team is currently unbeaten in three competitive matches.

Reversal required

Although they picked up a highly credible draw at Bayern Munich last weekend, Mainz are now 10 Bundesliga matches without a win (seven defeats), the longest such run in the Bundesliga currently.

The 05ers will stay bottom over Christmas whatever happens on Matchday 15, but can cut the gap to Pauli to just a point with a win.

Four points from their last two games have lifted Die Kiezkicker into the relegation play-off spot and to within two points of outright safety, but they're still in danger of spending the winter break in the automatic drop zone, if results go against them this weekend.
