Historically bad start

For the first time in Mainz's history, they have gone the first eight games of a Bundesliga season without a win. If you add in the results from the end of last season, Bo Svensson's men are now 13 games without a win, since they beat Bayern over 6 months ago.
90'

No change

So the final whistle goes and it is as we were: Bayern are still unbeaten and Mainz are still winless. The hosts worked hard and cannot be faulted for effort, but a ruthlessly efficient Bayern took all three points.

Playing down the clock

Bayern are not showing so much attacking intent now, with a two-goal cushion and Tuesday to prepare for. Mainz cannot take advantage, though, and this lead looks like it will suffice for the Bavarians.

First to rest

Thomas Tuchel digs into his depleted reserves to give Leon Goretzka an early bath, Bouna Sarr replacing him. Thomas Müller remains on the bench, but he may well be kept wrapped up for Tuesday.

Tireless hosts

Mainz have certainly put in plenty of graft today, but it looks increasingly like they are not going to be rewarded with their first win of the season. Could they yet claw back a third draw, though?

What a difference a minute makes

From being close to being back on level terms to being two goals to the good can take just a minute, and that has happened just now! Goretzka shows Bell how to find the bottom corner from the edge of the area, picking his spot from Jamal Musiala's pass.

Inches away!

A great break from Mainz and Danny da Costa lays the ball on a plate for Bell, who looks for the bottom corner but misses by a matter of inches! So close to an equaliser!

Trying to turn the screw

An intense 45 minutes is the last thing Bayern want ahead of a trip to Turkey to face Galatasaray in midweek, so they would like to wrap up the points here. Kimmich leads by example with a low shot to test Zentner's alertness.

Mainz edge ahead

Bell's shot means Mainz have now had more attempts than Bayern, but then the record champions have always scored the same or more than their opponents in the second half of games this season, so they will be confident of at the very least holding on to their lead.

Mainz in this game

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
That save from Ulreich prevented what looked like a certain equaliser and, indeed, it was a bigger chance to score than the one Coman took at the other end, at least according to xG.

Tuchel wants more

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel is not reading anything into that negative run of results for Bayern in Mainz, joking that "only one of [the defeats] was with me on the bench." Speaking to Sky, he added: “There are places where you traditionally struggle, and this is one for us. But we were building up momentum before the international break and let’s see if we can keep it going today.”

History not important

Mainz have won their last three home games against Bayern, but that means nothing to Bo Svensson. "They don't influence what happens today - though we will try to continue it," he said.

Svensson "Long way to go"

Bo Svensson is talking to Sky Deutschland and is trying to take the pressure off his team ahead of today's game. “No matter how this game goes, there are still many more to come," he said. "We’ve been heading in the right direction, even if we’ve not been getting the wins, and we want to keep going.”

Threadbare Bayern

Bayern are in town

Here are the record champions arriving in Mainz...

More on those teams

Kohr is recalled in midfield for Mainz, while De Ligt replaces the injured Upamecano at the heart of the Bayern defence. Kimmich and Goretzka are passed fit in central midfield. Müller, who can set a new record for most Bundesliga wins today, is among the subs.

Mainz starting line-up

Zentner (c) - Van den Berg, Bell, Fernandes - Da Costa, Kohr, Barreiro, Caci - Gruda, Lee - Ajorque

Mainz subs

Rieß, Leitsch, Widmer, Barkok, Richter, Krauß, Guilavogui, Papela, Onisiwo

Bayern starting line-up

Ulreich – Laimer, De Ligt, Kim, Davies – Kimmich (c), Goretzka – Coman, Musiala, Sane - Kane

Bayern subs

Peretz, Sarr, Krätzig, Pavlovic, Choupo-Moting, Müller, Tel

Bit of a bogey team

Bayern have won a whopping 71 percent of all league games against Mainz over the years, with the Carnival club triumphing just seven times. However, four of those Mainz wins have come in the last 15 league assignments, including victories in each of their last three meetings at the MEWA Arena.

Svensson addresses winless start

"We haven’t had the start to the season that we wanted. We had a lot of injuries, and we had some results going against us. I’m not saying we played well until now, but we had a couple of games that could’ve finished differently. Of course, this influences me as well in my job and in how I am as a person. I try to separate it, but it’s difficult. At the end of the day, the focus for me in the job as a coach is to try to give my players the things that they need to perform. They’re not there for me, I’m there for them. That is what you have to understand as a coach. That’s what I try to do. I’m not saying that I’m perfect in it, not at all, but that is the core of my job."

Watch: Skill, luck or both?

Coman scored a curious goal against Freiburg prior to the international break - how do these efforts compare on the fluke-metre?

De Ligt set to return

'Defensive crisis' has been bandied about in the German press of late, but Bayern appear well covered heading to Mainz. Matthijs de Ligt - one of their best players last season - is fit and should make his second league start of the campaign alongside Min-jae Kim at centre-back. Leon Goretzka moonlighted in the role in the DFB Cup, but is doubt.

Tuchel's view on Mainz

"Mainz love the role of the underdog. They've cultivated it. It's a strength of theirs, especially at times when things aren't going well. It's something we need to face up against. We were in good form, had one of our best games against Freiburg. Now we've had an international break and are training again for the first time with the whole team today, but there are different situations. I'm pleased we're playing at 6.30. It's not just about our play but also how we play physically. We're expecting a lot of long balls, lots of battling for the second balls. I'm well aware of what's coming our way."
camera-photo

Svensson's view on Bayern

“You can play your best game but still lose against Bayern. So, it’s not all in your own hands. Lots of things need to come together on the day to get a result, so the focus is on how we need to perform. That’s what I want to see from my team. Like what I saw away at Gladbach, even though not everything was perfect. Also like what I saw against Leverkusen, which probably sounds strange when you lost 3-0, but I recognised my team. I could get completely behind that performance. Not that it was perfect, not at all, but keeping heads up in this tough spell, standing together as a group and with the knowledge that we can only overcome it together. I recognised that in both of those games I mentioned. And that’s also the approach now against Bayern.”

Joint message for peace

The DFL has recommended a minute's silence in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 to remember all innocent victims and their relatives after the devastating events in the Middle East. With this joint effort, the DFL and DFB would like to send a common message from German football for peace. Football is a sport that brings people together, which is why we all stand up for peaceful coexistence, respect and tolerance. A fortnight ago, the terrorist attack by Hamas on the people of Israel and the State of Israel began. The DFL is shocked by this terrible attack and the events in the region.
