Full-time: Heidenheim 1-1 Mainz

A game of great quality comes to an end and neither side will be happy. It really could have gone either way with Heidenheim and Mainz both experiencing moments of great dominance and quality, personified by their forwards Kleindienst and Burkardt. In the end the goalkeepers won out, and while Heidenheim still have a chance of European football, Mainz aren't out of trouble yet.

Some bad news to end the half

Just before the whistle blew for the break Mainz captain Widmer went down and is now receiving treatment pitch side. Replays show a very nasty-looking twist of the knee for a player who has only just returned from injury.

Half-time: Heidenheim 0-1 Mainz

A very interesting opening 45 minutes come to a close and it's still all to play for. Mainz grew into the game and Burkardt rewarded some clever and patient build up play. The home side still look like a huge threat on the counter, though, and there's surely more goals in this.

Mainz boosted by Bochum

In today's first match Bochum beat Union Berlin 4-3 in one of the games of the season. That means that victory could also pull M05 out of the bottom three, leapfrogging Union to safety.

What's at stake

This game has taken on an increased importance following Cologne's 0-0 draw with Freiburg last night. Victory for Mainz tonight would mean they can no longer be automatically relegated this season. Heidenheim could jump from 11th to 8th in the table with a win, and close in on European football in their first-ever Bundesliga season.
camera-photo

More on the teams

Mainz's 1-1 draw with Cologne last time out was a heavy one. Amiri, Gruda and Mwene all miss today's game with suspensions while Onisiwo's gruesome hand injury also rules him out. Coming in are Fernandes, Widmer, Ajorque and Lee. Heidenheim, meanwhile, make a single change with Traoré back from suspension in place for Theuerkauf.

Heidenheim starting XI

Müller - Traoré, Mainka (c), Gimber, Föhrenbach - Schöppner - Dinkçi, Sessa, Beste - Pieringer, Kleindienst

Heidenheim subs

Eicher, Theuerkauf, Pick, Dovedan, Beck, Janeš, Schimmer, Thomalla, Kühlwetter

Mainz starting XI

Zentner - Fernandes, Van den Berg, Hanche-Olsen - Widmer (c), Kohr, Barreiro, Caci - Burkardt, Lee - Ajorque

Mainz subs

Rieß, Batz, Da Costa, Richter, Krauß, Guilavogui, Papela, Ngankam, Weiper

All eyes on Mainz

It's a massive day for Mainz. If they win today, Cologne are officially relegated and their own hopes of survival are kept alive. If the 05ers lose, one of Union and Bochum could pull further clear of the bottom-three. Hosts Heidenheim, meanwhile, are just four points back from seventh and would move to within a point of a European place with victory.

Henriksen's view ahead of Heidenheim

"This game is another final for us. We want to go there and show how good we are. If we play well, we've got a good chance. We need to all want the ball and dare to make mistakes. That's football."
camera-photo

Schmidt's view on Mainz

"Mainz are currently fighting for survival in the Bundesliga, even though they were written off a few weeks ago. After the change of coach, they've worked their way up with a lot of intensity and now they have their fate in their own hands. As such, they''ll do everything in their power to take three points."
