Full-time: Cologne 0-2 Darmstadt

Darmstadt live to fight another day. They would’ve been relegated with defeat today, but instead they take their survival push into Matchday 31 thanks to Christoph Klarer and Oscar Vilhelmsson’s second-half goals that ends a 22-game winless run in the Bundesliga. The Lilies are back to within five points of Cologne, who fail to reduce their four-point deficit to Mainz in 16th before their game on Sunday.

Vilhelmsson seals it!

Holtmann nips in to pinch the ball off the Cologne defence. His shot is saved by Schwäbe but not held, allowing Vilhelmsson to steal in and tap in a second for Darmstadt.

Teasing cross in from the left. Adamyan gets on the end, tries to control it with his chest, but it pops up for Schuhen to dart out and collect. Time running out for the hosts...

The centre-backs appears at centre-forward after winning the ball in midfield. He tries to force his way through in the box, but a combination of two defenders and a bit of his own teammate halt the defender's drive.

The man for big goals?

It's just Klarer's second Bundesliga goal. His first earned a 2-2 draw in the 95th minute against Frankfurt on Matchday 18.

Huge goal!

Cologne fail to deal with a corner from the right. Two blue shirts get a touch before it sits up for Klarer, who places his shot between the legs of a defender and Schwäbe unsighted on the line. A massive moment at the bottom!

Audacious from Skarke!

A Cologne free-kick into the box causes Schuhen real issues, but it results in a Darmstadt break. Skarke sees Schwäbe off his line and decides to go from well inside his own half. The Effzeh keeper can watch it trundle comfortably wide, but there was an initial sense of panic there.

Adamyan!

Glorious opportunity for the Armenia international as he's played through, goes round the left of Schuhen but then smashes his shot off target, unable to really wrap his foot around it. The flag goes up for offside to spare his blushes, but the ball should've been in the Darmstadt net there.

Vilhelmsson!

Not even 15 seconds gone and Darmstadt carve out a chance. Vilhelmsson puts his shot straight at Schwäbe, though.

Change apiece

Like-for-like from both coaches as they make a half-time switch in attack.

Half-time: Cologne 0-0 Darmstadt

Nothing to separate the bottom two teams as yet after 45 minutes. Alidou has hit the post in the best effort of the half. A point does keep Darmstadt's survival hopes alive, if only for 24 hours at least. They're probably the more content of the sides.

News elsewhere

Bochum thought they had gone ahead in Wolfsburg, which wouldn't be good news for Cologne (or Darmstadt, but less crucial). VfL were in 15th at kick-off, five points above the Billy Goats. But Bochum's goal has been ruled out.

Schwäbe into action

A couple of attempts from the visitors. The first is blocked from Bader. Skarke's follow-up then takes a deflection and forces Schwäbe to push it wide.

Lilies come forward

The visitors have built up a bit of momentum suddenly and throw the ball into the box a couple of times. Eventually Cologne manage to get it clear.

Alidou twists this way and that in the box before finally firing off a shot on his right foot. Schuhen is beaten in the Darmstadt goal but his right-hand post comes to his rescue to keep things goalless.

A Cologne corner is played short and eventually finds its way to Thielmann. The striker-turned-right-back lets fly from 25 yards. Well over.

Now Waldschmidt is in behind and drags his shot wide from left of centre. Flag immediately goes up in any case. He was well off. Positive start from the hosts.

Almost set

The Effzeh cheerleaders have taken up their position on the pitch as the RheinEnergieStadion prepares to welcome the two teams for this huge six-pointer at the bottom.

What's at stake?

Darmstadt are currently bottom, eight points behind Cologne and 12 shy of Mainz in the play-off spot. The Lilies will be relegated today if they lose. This is regardless of Mainz’s result against Freiburg, since the 05ers host the Billy Goats next week, meaning at least one of them will earn points so that Darmstadt cannot get out of the bottom two.

Watch: Darmstadt take it all in

Darmstadt team news

It's also two changes from Torsten Lieberknecht from last week's loss to Freiburg. Captain Fabian Holland is out for the season with a knee injury, while Emir Karic drops to the bench. Fabian Nürnberger returns following an ankle issue, and Tim Skarke is also back.

Cologne team news

Timo Schultz makes two changes from the side that pushed Bayern all the way last week. Dejan Ljubicic is ill, so Eric Martel slots back in following suspension. Luca Waldschmidt gets his first start since suffering a broken leg up front in place of Linton Maina. And Mark Uth is back in the squad for the first time since December after a knee issue.

Lieberknecht's view on Cologne

"Cologne as a team sprint a lot. With Kainz, Alidou, Maina they have a number of players who can make their mark in transition. Cologne are also dangerous from set pieces. At home in front of 50,000 people, they'll be pushed forward by their crowd. I believe they'll press us high."
camera-photo

Schultz's view on Darmstadt

"We'll give our all to get three points on Saturday. The focus should be fully on us. We need to make sure that we're more dangerous in front of goal and create more chances. We're approaching every game like a final. We want to win against Darmstadt, then we'll look at the table again on Sunday. Then it's one week at a time."

Unwanted records

Saturday's encounter pits the team with the weakest attack (Cologne have scored only 23 goals this season) against the side with the leakiest defence (no other team has conceded more than Darmstadt's 72 goals).
2:03
camera-professional-play-symbol

Cologne's reason for optimism

Timo Schultz's team were beaten by Bayern Munich last weekend but the Billy-Goats would always have been looking at this weekend's fixture as one they must ensure they win. The hosts will take heart from the fact they have never lost to Darmstadt in the Bundesliga (seven wins, two draws).

Situation critical

For The Lilies - who are 12 points from the relegation play-off spot - the equation is simple: lose on Saturday, and they are down. Torsten Lieberknecht's men were narrowly defeated at home to Freiburg last weekend to make it 22 games without victory.

Relegation talk of the town

When bottom place plays the side just above, there is only one word on everyone's lips. Yet for Cologne and Darmstadt, keeping the 'R' word at bay for at least one more week will be the order of the day when the teams meet on Matchday 30. It was the Billy-Goats who prevailed the last time the sides met.
