A one-sided affair sees Freiburg ease to three points. Michael Gregoritsch netted a double for the hosts, who are clearly keen on top four. Schalke are up against it with just five games left to play. The Royals Blues remain second from bottom.
Kübler off target
Lukas Kübler goes it alone and drags a shot wide.
Hosts on the rise
Schwolow saves from substitute Wagner. Freiburg will take provisional third place, ahead of Union Berlin and RB Leipzig, who are also playing today. This is a solid result for Streich's side in the search for a top four finish.
Party time in Freiburg
Home hero Matthias Ginter latches onto Merlin Röhl's flick on from the corner and scores from close range. Schalke's misery is complete.
11 times under pressure
Big applause among the home supporters for the departing Michael Gregoritsch and Ritsu Doan. Superb displays from both players today.
Schalke's unwanted reverse
Grifo shoots wide
Grifo waltzes through on the left and prods wide of the far post. The Freiburg attacker looked offside there, in fairness.
Philipp Lienhart gets to the edge of the Schalke area and tries to pass the ball into the far corner. His effort takes a nick off a defender and rolls just wide. The subsequent corner brings no joy for the hosts.
Gregoritsch gets to the near post to meet Günter's cross and makes contact, sending the ball goalwards. Schwolow manages to make the save.
Thomas Reis throws Mehmet Can Aydin and Thomas Ouwejan on for the last half an hour.
Frey shot, Flekken save. The Royal Blues need to do a bit better than that.
Freiburg home free
That might well be that. Great work by Doan, who hustles his way through and feeds Gregoritsch. The Austrian pokes through for Höler, whose low shot is saveable, but somehow squeezes through Schwolow. The keeper hasn't covered himself in glory there.
Frey's looping header has Flekken spooked. The Freiburg keeper palms the dropping ball over the bar. The subsequent corner comes to nothing.
Off we go again
The second half is go. Double swap for the visitors at the break with Frey and Greiml in the mix for the second 45'.
A couple of Gregoritsch goals and Freiburg are flying. Schalke have rarely threatened.
Uronen slides in on a spinning Doan. The spin and subsequent fall make this look like an ugly tackle. Yellow card for the Schalke man.
Gregoritsch using his noggin
Doan has a pop from distance but that's miles off target.
Man on a mission
Michael Gregoritsch Marius Bülter
Günter off target
Günter drives one wide following a short run. Freiburg's fans give a collective groan before breaking into party mood again.
Freiburg double up
It's that man Gregoritsch again and this is a tasty header. A ball is whipped towards the area from a central-ish position by Günter and the Austrian forward flicks a superb header away towards the far corner and in.
Schwolow denies Grifo
Grifo runs at goal and cuts outside before shooting low. Schwolow dives across and pushes that one wide. Decent save.
Worth giving a shout out to Ritsu Doan, who laid on his fourth goal assist today. That's more than any other Freiburg player has managed this season.
Moritz Jenz clobbers Höler on the right and Freiburg have a chance to stick one into the mixer, which Günter does. Nicolas Höfler heads off target.
Royal Blues in possession
The action continues
A shot at either end from Günter and Uronen, neither hugely threatening.
Gregoritsch on song
Michael Gregoritsch has brought his Bundesliga tally to nine goals today. That's the same amount he managed in the whole of last season. The Austrian is still a little way off his 2017/18 best of 13 goals when he was with Augsburg.
Höler hits one
Höler booms one on the bounce and that ball whistles narrowly over the top. The home fans are more than satisfied with their side's efforts so far.
As things stand
Oooh, Freiburg are inches away from a second. Doan has time to pick out the run of Grifo, who darts free towards goal from the right. Grifo aims a shot towards the far post and the ball fizzes against the base of the upright.
Bülter has a go
Marius Bülter has a wallop at goal but the Schalke man's effort cannons off a Freiburg defender.
Super through pass from Doan sends Gregoritsch in on goal. A tidy left-footed finish leaves Schwolow with no chance at his near post.
Welcome back Schwolow!
A double save from the former Freiburg man to deny Gregoritsch and then Doan! Schwolow is back into the Schalke line-up to replace the injured Ralf Fährmann, don't forget.
Steady as she goes
Both teams are prodding the ball about patiently when in possession, looking for openings.
We're underway in Freiburg.
Coin flip time. A super atmosphere on a warm day in the Black Forest. Freiburg want top four, Schalke are keen for points to stave off relegation. Here we go ...
Teams in tunnel
Both sets of players are shaking hands inside the tunnel. The fans outside wait expectantly.
Both sets of teams are coming to the end of their pre-match warm-ups. It's almost time for those all important words from Streich and Reis inside the dressing rooms. A huge three points up for grabs today, but who will be leaving the Europa-Park Stadion with them? We're soon to find out.
Freiburg's solid Schalke past
Freiburg go into this one having won their last four games against Schalke without conceding a single goal. Christian Streich's side are also unbeaten in their last seven against the Royal Blues.
Van den Berg back
Defender Sepp van den Berg is finally back in Schalke's injury-ravaged squad, the 21-year-old Liverpool FC loanee taking his place on the away bench after six months on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Freiburg need the points to keep their hopes of breaking back into the top four alive, while Schalke are fighting for their top-flight lives. Freiburg can't fall lower than their current standing of fifth, but could climb as high as third if Leipzig and Union slip up. Schalke, 17th after Matchday 28, could end the weekend anywhere between bottom of the table and 15th.
