Ludovic Ajorque the talk of the town

The imposing French striker - who stands 6'5" tall - has only been on the Mainz books for a few months after joining from Strasbourg in January, but he has made a real impact in recent weeks. The 29-year-old has hit five goals in his last seven Bundesliga outings, and will be looking to add to that tally against Bayern this afternoon.

Bayern's Matchday 29 trip to Mainz will be no regular away day for Thomas Tuchel, revisiting the club where he stepped up from the youth ranks to the professional coaching arena back in 2009. Over the next five seasons, Mainz regularly punched above their weight playing the modern, high-tempo brand of attacking football that swiftly established Tuchel’s credentials as a top emerging tactician. This weekend, however, with Bayern looking to maintain pole position in the standings, there will be no room for sentimentality.

However, it's not the one-sided fixture those results might suggest. Mainz blew Bayern away late in the 2021/22 campaign, a week after Bayern had put the seal on the title. They also beat the record champions 2-1 at home the previous season.

Sadio Mane had a hand in three goals as Bayern romped to victory over Mainz earlier this season. More recently, the Bavarian giants knocked Svensson's team out of the DFB Cup (4-0 in Mainz).

The Tuchel factor

Tuchel's Mainz years still take some beating. He took them to the top of the table and into Europe during a memorable five-year stint at the helm, before going on to win the DFB Cup with Borussia Dortmund, Ligue 1 with PSG and the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea. Results have been mixed across his first five games in charge of Bayern, but the destination of the 2022/23 Bundesliga title is still in his astute hands.

Thomas Tuchel forged a reputation as one of the brightest minds in football at Mainz, but current coach Bo Svensson is faring even better statistically. He boasts an average of 1.48 points per game across his 82 in charge, of which 31 have been wins. Jürgen Klopp averaged 1.13 while Tuchel – the club's most successful coach to date – averaged 1.41. To put it another way, Svensson has won 40 per cent of his matches as Mainz coach, and Tuchel 38 per cent.

Mainz were made to settle for a point in Cologne, but are unbeaten in nine since losing at Union Berlin on 4 February. It's the longest unbeaten run of any club right now, and keeps the 05ers in with a shot at European qualification. They're eighth, two points outside the top six, with six games remaining. However, seventh may also suffice, depending on who wins the DFB Cup.
