Conclusion
As in the first leg, Cologne took the lead in the derby against Düsseldorf, but have to accept a late equaliser. Cologne were the more active and dangerous team for long stretches of the match and deservedly took the lead through Kainz. However, due to Schmied's lapse in concentration with a handball in the penalty area, Düsseldorf got another chance for a late comeback and took it. All things considered, the draw is a fair result.

Fortuna keep things familiar
Düsseldorf, meanwhile, name the same eleven that played from the beginning of the second half against Hertha Berlin last week and turned and came from behind to win 2-1. Pejčinović is rewarded for his brace off the bench and therefore starts for the fourth time this season, with Appelkamp also included. These two were brought on at half-time for Niemiec and Kwarteng last week.
Rondić included
Cologne make two changes to the starting line-up from their defeat against Magdeburg last time out. Gazibegović and Rondić start in place of the suspended Thielmann and Downs. For Rondić, it is his first start for the club.
Daniel Thoune's thoughts
"It's an exciting challenge for us against a top club. The stadium will be loud – we've shown in the past that we can handle that. We will stay true to ourselves and need to be efficient. We won't be given much. Cologne have been very good and energetic in defence since their system change."

Gerhard Struber on facing Düsseldorf
"We have great respect for Fortuna Düsseldorf. They try to counter-attack quickly and be clinical in front of goal. It's not by chance that they're up there. We caused problems for Düsseldorf in the reverse fixture. I firmly believe that on Sunday we will once again have a firm grip on the steering wheel."
Can Fortuna finally succeed away from home?
Düsseldorf's last home win over their Rhine rivals was a 2-0 win in November 2019, while their last victory in Cologne dates back more than 35 years. That was in October 1989, when Düsseldorf achieved a 3-1 victory under Aleks Ristic, with substitute Richard Walz scoring twice. Cologne's coach at the time was Christoph Daum.
It's been a while
Cologne's last victory was a 3-2 win in Düsseldorf in December 2013, while their last home win in this derby was in October 1998. There have been two draws since then.
A draw in Cologne as well
The last encounter in Cologne also ended in a 2-2 draw. In May 2020, in the Bundesliga, Fortuna led 2-0 in before Anthony Modeste (88th minute) and Jhon Cordoba (91st) this time sealed a late comeback for Cologne.
A dramatic first meeting
In the reverse fixture, Cologne took the lead twice, but Düsseldorf equalised on both occasions. The second of which saw Jona Niemiec score in the fifth minute of stoppage-time to secure a 2-2 draw.
