Full-time: Union Berlin 4-4 Stuttgart

What an unbelievable game of football! A historic night in the Bundesliga as the game finishes 4-4 with all of the goals coming in the first half. Stuttgart twice came from behind, first from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 and then from 3-2 down to lead 4-3, but Ilić's second on the stroke of half time proved to be the final goal of the game for 4-4. In comparison, the second half was quiet as Stuttgart dominated but were unable to create any real chances.

Union upping the ante

After letting Stuttgart dominate for much of this half. Union have suddenly started to look threatening. This time, a dangerous cross from the left is only just cleared in time.

Hollerbach wins a corner

Hollerbach drives at the Stuttgart defence again and tries his luck. His shot is deflected out for a corner, but it comes to nothing.

Stuttgart can't break Union down

Strange to say, given it is 4-4, but Stuttgart are really struggling to break down Union's defence in this half. It feels like a completely different game.

That was a half chance for Chabot as he gets on the end of a set-piece, but he can't get it on target.

61'

A quieter half

Seems the coaches of both teams had a word with their players at half-time, as both sides have been much less open in the second half so far. A shame really.

A new xG record!

That goal from Querfeld is officially the least likely goal since xG stats began in the Bundesliga (2020/21). The goal had an xG value of 1.2 %. Outrageous!

Almost another spectacular

Hollerbach is alone against two Stuttgart defenders and decides to try one, he's not far away either. That could have been another fantastic goal.

Half-time: Union Berlin 4-4 Stuttgart

Simply unbelievable! It's 4-4 at half-time. Union took a 2-0 lead before Stuttgart pulled it back to 2-2. Querfeld then scored a goal of the season contender to make it 3-2 before Stuttgart once again responded to lead 4-3, only for Ilić to equalise with the last kick of the half. What a ridiculous half of football!

4-4! The wildest half in Bundesliga history?

This is simply ridiculous. Ilić gets on the end of another set-piece and it is level at the break. It's 4-4 at half-time. What is going on?

Führich does brilliantly to get to the byline before pulling it back to Stiller. He hits it, but Rønnow is there to palm it away.

Oh wow! That is incredible!

That's a goal of the season contender. Querfeld has a bit of space to enter the Stuttgart half, he travels a few metres and then decides to hit one from miles out and finds the top corner. Simply unbelievable!

More on those teams

Steffen Baumgart makes two changes to his starting lineup compared to the scoreless draw in Leverkusen: Tom Rothe and Benedict Hollerbach replace Josip Juranović (injured) and the benched Tim Skarke. The visitors are also showing two changes with Enzo Millot and Deniz Undav in from the get-go to replace the suspended Nick Woltemade and Jamie Leweling, who is carrying a knock.

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Union Berlin

“They’ve really settled into a rhythm, they bring high running and intensity to the pitch and are tough to break down. Add to that the fact we’re playing at the Alten Försterei stadium and that means that they’ll be a tough nut to crack.”

Dangerous on the road

Despite having lost their last five Bundesliga home games, Stuttgart have only lost one of their previous five away games. Sebastian Hoeneß' men have also won their last four meetings with Union (three in the Bundesliga, one in the DFB Cup), so it's set to be another test for Steffen Baumgart's in-form Union.

© Sebastian Widmann

Breathing room

Union already have more points at this stage in the season (34) than they managed in the entirety of the previous campaign (33). Against Stuttgart, they also have the chance to mathematically ensure their survival; something they only managed seconds before the end of last season. This is largely down to Union having the current longest unbeaten run in the Bundesliga (five games), having taken points off Leverkusen, Bayern, Frankfurt, Freiburg and Wolfsburg in that time.
