Co-hosts Mexico won a fourth straight match at this 2026 FIFA World Cup as they comfortably beat Ecuador to progress to the round of 16. They started strongly and were 2-0 up just after the half-hour mark thanks to goals from Julian Quinones and Raúl Jiménez. That was how the score stayed, with Ecuador - who were reduced to 10 men late on when ex-Bayer Leverkusen man Piero Hincapié - struggling to cause any problems for Mexico in response. As such, Javier Aguirre's men can now look forward to a tie against either England or DR Congo.

How they got here: Ecuador

La Tri’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages looked slim after losing to Côte d’Ivoire and drawing with minnows Curaçao in their opening two Group E games. The South Americans needed to beat already-qualified Germany to stand any chance of making the last 32 - and they did just that as goals from Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata secured a memorable 2-1 victory.

How they got here: Mexico

The co-hosts are one of only three teams to reach the knockout stages with a 100 percent group-stage record - and one of only two who are yet to concede a goal. After kicking off the tournament with a 2-0 win over South Africa, Javier Aguirre’s side defeated South Korea 1-0 before overcoming Czechia 3-0 in their final Group A encounter.
