Full-time: Belgium 3-2 Senegal

What a turnaround! Senegal looked comfortable for much of the game, with Belgium struggling to really threaten their defence even as the second half of normal time was coming to an end. Two quick goals gave them the lifeline they desperately needed, before a clumsy late challenge from Camara on Tielemans in the second half of extra-time awarded the Red Devils a last-minute penalty, which Tielemans dispatched himself in style.

Head-to-head record

This is Belgium’s first ever meeting with Senegal, who are through to the World Cup knockout stages for the third time in four appearances at the finals. The Red Devils, meanwhile, are hoping to reach at least the round of 16 for the seventh time since 1986.

How they got here: Senegal

Despite valiant displays against France and Norway, Senegal headed into their final Group I game against Iraq without a single point to their name. A comprehensive 5-0 victory boosted the Lions or Teranga’s hopes of a place in the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed sides, with results elsewhere confirming their progression.

How they got here: Belgium

Draws against Egypt (1-1) and Iran (0-0) in their opening two games left Belgium needing to beat New Zealand in their final Group G match to reach the round of 32. The Red Devils had little trouble dispatching the All Whites, triumphing 5-1 in Vancouver to top the group.
