No Davies for opener

Alphonso Davies hasn't played since the start of May after suffering another thigh injury, and the Bayern man will have to wait a little longer to make his return as Canada coach Jesse Marsch confirmed his captain won't play in Friday's Group B opener. "We did a scan yesterday. It showed very positive signs that he's healing incredibly well, almost completely, so we're getting ready to ramp things up. He's shown in training that every day he's getting stronger and better, and can focus more on football behaviours. I don't see any reason why a week from now, he's not ready to even be considered as a starter," the ex-RB Leipzig coach said at Thursday's pre-match press conference in Toronto.

How they got here: Bosnia

Bosnia were drawn in Group H of UEFA qualifying, finishing second behind Austria to advance to the play-offs. After defeating Wales on penalties in the semi-finals, they also held four-time champions Italy to a draw after 120 minutes. In the subsequent shoot-out, Bosnia held their nerve to progress to the finals for just the second time in their history as an independent nation.

How they got here: Canada

Canada will compete in their second consecutive World Cup as hosts. They come into this encounter in good form, having lost just one of their past 18 matches (not including penalty shoot-outs), and will be eager to put on a show in front of their own supporters.

No fewer than six Bosnia players ply their trade in Germany's top two divisions. The sextet is led by Edin Džeko, who has the most caps (148) and the most goals (73) for his country. Elsewhere, Nikola Vasilj (St. Pauli), Nikola Katić (Schalke), Ermedin Demirović (VfB Stuttgart), Dženis Burnić (Karlsruhe) and Haris Tabaković (Borussia Mönchengladbach, on loan from Hoffenheim) are also in the squad.

Marsch has been Canada head coach since 2024 but enjoyed a spell at Leipzig in 2021 following a season as Ralf Rangnick's assistant in 2018/19. He lasted just five months in the top job before being let go in December.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch recently provided an update on the 25-year-old. "He's still going through a lot of little recovery issues to see if he can get himself to 100 percent," explained the former RB Leipzig boss. "We're giving him until the very last day, the very last minute, to give himself the best opportunity. And he still feels adamant that he can prepare himself and get ready to go."

Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies is the biggest star in the Canada squad for this tournament. The seven-time Bundesliga winner is his country's captain, and has 15 goals in 58 caps. However, he faces a race against time to be ready for the Group B opener, having been sidelined with a hamstring injury since May.
