Full-time: Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-5 Freiburg

Höler sent Freiburg on their way to a resounding 5-1 victory over third-tier Düsseldorf. Schleusener did bring a goal back to give the hosts some hope at 3-1, but that only fed the Breisgau club's hunger, who added another two, booking their place in the second round of the DFB Cup.

It's five!

And it's that man again. Matanović is on hand to fire Freiburg's fifth past Fortuna who, despite keeping the Breisgau club at bay for large parts of the game, have allowed the floodgates to open.

Changes for both teams

Goalscorer Makengo is replaced by Freiburg legend Günter, while Cyriaque Irié also comes on for the impressive Beste. For Fortuna, Slimani replaces Müller.

Another for Freiburg!

A special moment for Makengo, who scores his first professional goal for the Breisgau club. He starts the move, and finishes it. Darting down the left, he receives the ball back from Matanović before biding his time and slotting the ball under Lord.

They've got one back!

Schleusener scores against his former club. Is there a way back for Fortuna? Zimmermann's pinpoint corner is met by the head of the Fortuna striker, who makes a strong connection with the ball to give the hosts a small amount of hope.

Freiburg in control!

It's two in quick succession for the visitors, and Scherhant is again involved. From the left, he whips a superb cross towards the far post, which is met by the head of Höler, who heads the ball back across goal and into the path of Kübler, who gives Freiburg a deserved 3-0 lead.

Double change

Fortuna have nothing to lose and it leads to two changes, with Förster and Gonçalves coming on.

There it is!

And it's the two substitutes who link up. Scherhant whips the resulting free-kick deliciously towards the far post, and it's met by the head of Matanović, who leaps highest to fire his side into a two-goal advantage.

Attacking changes

With the threat that Fortuna have posed in the last few minutes, Schuster responds by bringing on Matanović and Scherhant in place of Grifo and Suzuki, who have been excellent tonight.
68'

Grifo!

He goes close for Freiburg yet again! They work is brilliantly to Freiburg's No.32 on the left. He cuts inside, feints past two Fortuna defenders before unleashing a curling effort towards goal, which is met by an equally impressive save from Lord.
67'

Wide!

That's one of the clearest sights on goal that Fortuna have had. Freiburg lose the ball in a dangerous position which leads to a 4v3 situation in the hosts' favour. The ball is eventually played wide to Müller, who fizzes his effort narrowly wide of Backhaus' near post.
64'

Clever

Suzuki picks up the ball in a dangerous position and tries to thread a through ball through to Höler, but Fortuna are alert to the situation and manage to clear it for a corner, which doesn't amount to anything.
60'

Fortuna blink first

The hosts make two changes, with Paulina replacing Hottmann in attack, while Van der Sloot enters the fray in place of Risch.

Freiburg's dangerman

Suzuki has been excellent for Freiburg this evening. The Japan international missed an opportunity to double his team's lead, but is proving a constant threat for the Fortuna defence - often finding himself unmarked between the lines.
53'

Offside

Lord plays Fortuna into danger. His pass finds Freiburg's Grifo, who is unable to get his shot away but the ball eventually lands at the feet of Höler, who is flagged offside after the ball deflected off Grifo.
49'

Grifo!

Beste progresses the ball brilliantly down the right. He eventually drives a low cross into the path of Grifo, who strikes the ball first time but the Freiburg legend, celebrating a recent contract extension, fires narrowly over.
48'

On the charge

Zimmermann wins a corner, of which is played short, and eventually crossed by Risch, but Freiburg are able to eventually clear after a short game of head tennis.
46'

We go again

Fortuna are still in the mix, and they get the second period under way.
Kick-off!

Half-time: Fortuna Düsseldorf 0-1 Freiburg

Höler's strike is the difference at the break. Suzuki had an excellent chance to double Freiburg's lead, but Fortuna are very much in this DFB Cup clash.

42'

Half-time approaching

Freiburg are happy to keep possession with the break just around the corner. Without needing to get out of first gear, they've done well to manage this tie against Fortuna who, apart from Oberdorf's earlier effort, have rarely troubled Backhaus in the Freiburg goal.
38'

Frustration building

The referee waves away Schleusener's appeals for a free-kick after Backhaus collected the ball after the Fortuna forward thought had Lienhart purposefully played the ball back to his goalkeeper. Seconds later, Hottmann concedes a needless free-kick.

Three shots on target, one goal. Freiburg are dominating possession and in control. Can they double their lead before the break, or will Fortuna find an equaliser?

Suzuki denied!

Wow! A gorgeous move met by a sensational save. Freiburg play the ball through the middle and Eggestein so elegantly flicks the ball into the path of Suzuki, who, with only the 'keeper to beat, forces an excellent save from Lord.
27'

In search of an equaliser

Fortuna have seen a lot more of the ball in the last couple of minutes, but they're unable to find a way through Freiburg's resilient defence, who remain in a strong shape.
23'

First caution

Frieburg's Suzuki earns the game's first booking. He loses the ball before bringing down Hendrix to halt an attack.
22'

Inviting pressure

Since going behind, Fortuna have been unable to get out of their half. The visitors are dominating possession now.

Poacher's finish!

Osterhage does brilliantly to go past two Düsseldorf players before crossing from the byline for Höler, who, at the near post, fires the ball past Lord from close range to give Freiburg an early lead.

The game's first shot goes in favour of Fortuna. After a long throw-in, Freiburg are unable to clear the ball and it eventually makes its way through to Oberdorf at the far post, who strikes the ball first time but it flies just over Backhaus' bar.

Promising start

After withstanding early pressure, Düsseldorf are growing into the game. In search of an opening, they're calm on the ball. But eventually Freiburg are able to win it back.
3'

Early charge from Freiburg

The visitors aim to set the tone early on. They win a free-kick which is whipped in by Grifo, but Düsseldorf are able to clear their lines on the edge of the box.

More on that Freiburg team

The Breisgau side were in action internationally earlier this week in the UEFA Conference League qualifying against Scottish representatives Motherwell, and they've made five changes from that game. After their 3-1 victory in Scotland, Kübler, Lienhart, Osterhage, Grifo and Höler are preferred over Rosenfelder, Treu, Engelhardt, Scherhant and Matanovic.

New reality for Düsseldorf

The two-time DFB Cup winners suffered the agony of relegation from Bundesliga 2 last season and start the new campaign back in Germany's third tier for the first time since 2008/09.

Freiburg's cup history

The Bundesliga outfit will certainly be favourites after a proud recent cup record. They were beaten by Leipzig in their first-ever final appearance in 2021/22, and last season's defeat by VfB Stuttgart in the semi-finals marked the second time they have reached the last four since. They proved their knockout pedigree by making the final of last season's UEFA Europa League, where they were beaten by Aston Villa.
