Rostock head coach Daniel Brinkmann on facing Stuttgart

"It will be important that we suffer for a while, but that we are also courageous and not afraid to play football. I don't want to see us just defending. It's up to us to ignite that final spark."

Sebastian Hoeneß on facing Rostock

“They’re a very cohesive unit. My opposite number, Daniel Brinkmann, is implementing a clear style of play. Rostock play possession-based football, defend aggressively and try to create space on the wings. We’re going to need high intensity, and a plan for each phase of the game. Playing two competitive games already will definitely be an advantage for Hansa, so we’re going to have to push ourselves to the limit.”

A tough place to visit

Stuttgart have won 13 of their 30 meetings with Rostock, who have got the better of VfB on eight occasions. Those Hansa wins include four victories in as many cup meetings between 1992 and 2018, before the Swabians finally eliminated Die Hanseaten in 2019. VfB also won 1-0 in September 2020 - the teams’ third first-round encounter in as many seasons.

Memorable last-four tie

Third-tier outfit Rostock have only reached the third round once in the last 15 seasons, but they pushed Bayern Munich all the way in the semi-finals of the 1999/2000 edition - having beaten Stuttgart 2-1 in the last eight. The north German club eventually lost 3-2 in Munich as Ottmar Hitzfeld's side survived a second-half scare against their then-Bundesliga opponents.
