Onwards and upwards

Kompany & Co. will go into their meeting with Bayer Leverkusen with added confidence after tonight's thumping of Atalanta. Bayern will look to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga with a win over sixth-placed Leverkusen on Saturday, who they beat 3-0 earlier on in the season. The following Wednesday, they'll welcome Atalanta to the Allianz Arena in the second and final leg of the Champions League round of 16.

Captain Joshua Kimmich on Bayern's imperious performance

"Unfortunately, we conceded a goal at the end. Otherwise, it was a very strong performance, especially in the first half. It took us about five minutes to get into the game and after that, we created one big chance after another. The way we played was impressive. We knew we could really hurt them."
camera-photo

Max Eberl on Bayern's second half casualties

"Jamal Musiala's injury is the least serious; it was more of a precautionary measure. Davies' is unfortunately another muscular issue. I'm not sure about Jonas Urbig, he was a bit dazed and had a headache."
camera-photo

Vincent Kompany on that astounding victory

"That was the performance that we wished for. We could have scored one or two more, because we were attacking the whole game and created so many chances. We always play with really high intensity in training and enjoy one-on-one battles, which is why they did so well today".

Full-time: Atalanta 1-6 Bayern Munich

Bayern record an incredible victory here in Bergamo, smashing six past Atalanta in a red-hot performance. Jackson wasted no time in adding their fourth after the re-start, before Olise bagged a brilliant second and Musiala got himself on the scoresheet from close range. The hosts did get a consolation goal late on, but that's all it was, with Bayern racing into a surely uncatchable lead in this round of 16 first-leg.

Half-time: Atalanta 0-3 Bayern Munich

The visitors are already running away with this tie having blown Atalanta away in the first 45. There was a fierce tempo to the game from minute one, which soon swung in Bayern's favour and led to them taking the lead through a clever corner routine. Individual brilliance from Olise doubled their lead, and he then turned provider for Gnabry just minutes later for the third.

Kompany's Italian job

The Bayern boss has only faced one Italian side in his managerial career to date - Inter Milan in last season's Champions League quarter-finals. The Italians got the better of Bayern and Kompany that time, but the Belgian will be itching to put things right in this season's competition.
camera-photo

Davies also on board

In addition to Kane, Alphonso Davies also made the Bayern squad for the match after two weeks out with a thigh injury. He is seen as a doubt for the starting line-up, but may well feature from the bench having trained with the team on Monday.

Raffaele Palladino on facing Bayern

“It will be a magical, wonderful night for us, as it’s a dream to be in the Champions League last 16 against one of the strongest teams in the world. Dreams are there to be experienced. We want to enjoy it to the full and cause difficulties for Bayern."
camera-photo

US-born teen keeper in squad

16-year-old Leonard Prescott was born in New York and plays for Germany U17 and Bayern U19. He was named among three goalkeepers in Bayern's squad for the first leg, alongside Urbig and Ulreich, with Neuer absent for the trip to Northern Italy.

Vincent Kompany on Bayern Munich's Champions League chances

"I love these periods where you have the chance - and you first need to work for those chances. We've got the second leg at home and want to progress. We've said very loudly what Bayern's objectives are in this competition. We're now in a period, in that tunnel where things are right. No fear. Just look at the opportunity and take our chances."
camera-photo

Vincent Kompany on facing Atalanta

"They're a special opponent and an interesting game for us coaches and our team. Atalanta have built themselves up step by step. Now they believe they can achieve something special."
camera-photo

Michael Olise's thoughts on Atalanta challenge

In the build-up to this encounter, Olise told Bayern's official website: "Quite simply: We have to show our best side – and win. We have to give our best performance in every game; you can't play any more matches in standby mode. If we win the first leg, then they have to come to the Allianz Arena and win there – that's incredibly difficult."
camera-photo

Familiar faces

There are several Bundesliga alumni amongst the Atalanta squad. Odilon Kossounou (Bayer Leverkusen), Sead Kolašinac (Schalke), Mitchel Bakker (Bayer Leverkusen) and Lazar Samardžić (Hertha Berlin, RB Leipzig) have all featured in the German top flight during their careers.
camera-photo

Bayern's record against Italian clubs

Bayern have won 11 and drawn three of their last 16 games against Serie A opponents (L2). One of those defeats came in last season's quarter-final first leg, when they were beaten 2-1 by Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena. A 2-2 draw at the San Siro in the return game was not enough to prevent the Nerazzurri from reaching the last four.
camera-photo

Atalanta's record against German clubs

The Bergamo outfit have lost only three of their 13 European meetings with German opposition, winning seven and drawing three. They have triumphed in four of their last five encounters with Bundesliga clubs, with last month's 2-0 reverse at Dortmund their only defeat in that time.
camera-photo

Kane set to return

The centre-forward was missing from the clash against Gladbach, but he is expected to be available for this one. With 45 goals in all competitions this term, his firepower will be worth its weight in gold.

Atalanta held

In their Serie A game at the weekend, Atalanta were held to a 2-2 draw by Udinese. That result leaves them five points adrift of the top four.
camera-photo

Urbig to start?

Manuel Neuer began Bayern's 4-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday evening but was taken off at half-time, to be replaced by Jonas Urbig (pictured). The club confirmed on Saturday that the captain had suffered a recurrence of his calf issue and would be out for an unspecified period time.

Tough quarter-final in store

The prize for getting through this round of 16 tie? A place in the last eight against either Real Madrid or Manchester City. One of Liverpool, Galatasaray, PSG or Chelsea would be the opponents in the semi-finals.

Atalanta - the story so far

Atalanta finished 15th in the league phase with four wins, one draw and three defeats, sending them into the knockout phase play-offs against Dortmund. Despite losing the first leg 2-0 in Germany, the Italian side turned the tables in the return fixture with a 4-1 victory to seal their spot in the last 16.
camera-photo

Bayern - the story so far

Vincent Kompany's charges breezed through the league phase. They finished second in the standings, winning seven and losing just one of their eight matches - a defeat against Arsenal, the only team to finish above the Bavarians in the table. As such, the Bundesliga leaders were able to avoid the play-offs, unlike their opponents here.
